Why do my lifts go down when I go to a different gym?

I've carried scales into the weight room to weigh the weights and bars before.

Also, there are a few 50 lbs olympic bars floating around out there.

I find the biggest thing that effects me when i change gyms is the height (and to a lesser degree, width) of the benches. With my short little legs I cant bench press flatfooted on some benches, while other benches are 6 or 8" lower.

even if the plates are off by a couple lbs-- thats not enough to account for a 25lb difference on your deadlifts.

its the thicker bar throwing you off (even tho your grip felt ok)-- switch bars :)

I am in the same boat bro.

the wider grips gonna feel different- the 1" diameters (prob in your AZ gym) are easier to use....or could be the bar's knurling (sp?)--the older bars at Golds get smoother & are harder to grip.

Actually it's the other way around. Golds has brand new bars while my AZ gym has some pretty warn out ones. I use chalk though so that really shouldn't matter to much.

Thicker bars tend to flex less. This makes it harder to get the weight moving as the flex in the bar normally means that the first inch or so doesnt involve lifting the whole weight (you can move the bar without the weights leaving the ground). This can make a huge difference.

Its the only bar that they have. Why would the thicker bar throw me off if my grip was not affected?
