My body's craving sugar (I think)

I have recently changed my diet and have cut down on carbs and anything with refined sugars.

Today about an hour after lunch, I started feeling drowsy and disoriented and had the urge to drink a coke. I fought it for a while for eventually I gave in and drank one (ahhhhh, much better).

I previously drank 1, sometimes 2 sodas per day and lots of juices (most have as much sugar as a soda), no sugar by means of candy or junk. I have cut those out and have been drinking a lot of water now. I still use juice in my protein shakes sometimes, when I don't feel like milk. Now, I do drink a cup of coffee in the morning (no sugar), but I don't think it was a caffeine craving, I know what those feel like (not fun). I think that I might be experiencing low blood sugar levels, how can I find out? If so, is this something that I just have to ride out until I just don't crave it anymore (no pain, no gain), or is there something I can eat or supplement to help out? I just don't want to resort to drinking cokes or eating candy every time this happens.

Thanks in advance fellas.

SoreArms, I know what you mean, I have pretty much cut Sugar out of my diet for the most part, keeping it very low around 20g per day at a very very max situation. But I still crave Sugar and Snickers Bars, and Juice sometimes, its just a thing you have to ween yourself off of. You have to figure that you have had sugar in your diet for a long time, probably like me and since you were in the 4th grade, and your body is used to it. If it gets uncontrollable, just take like 1/5 a glass of OJ and dilute the other 4/5 with Water, always seems to work with me.

If they are uncontrollable Sugar Cravings, you could possibly be diabetic? have you considered that? My grandmother was Diabetic and knew exactly when her insulin spiked up or down and it was primarily controlled with sugar if insulin was unavailable.

I would say you are probably not diabetic, but more likely dependant upon the evil sugar, and just need to ween yourself off... its like cigarettes, most people can't go cold turkey, but try to ween yourself off by the end of the month, should be very doable. Good luck on redefining your body.

forgot to add... 5-HTP (2x recc dose) and some L-phenalaline (not sure on spelling) work pretty well on cravings for food, and seem to have helped me on sugar.

you can get both pretty cheap off the internet, but will pay out the ass at GNC... I reccomend Vitamen world

try to ease into this new diet of yours instead of immediately cutting out all the "bad stuff". your body may have become accustomed to all the sugar you've been giving it over the years, need to time to unadjust.

How long has it been since you've cut back on sugar? It might take a few weeks or so to adjust. Eventually the cravings will be easier to overcome, so hang in there.

You could also try putting a lemon wedge in your water, or perhaps get some Crystal Light?? I don't drink it myself but apparently it's extremely sweet tasting.

Crystal Light is what saved me back in the day when I started a low carb diet. That stuff blew my sweet tooth out ;)

It's actually been a couple of weeks since I dropped most of the sugar in my diet, but had not had a problem until today.

Thinking about it, I have been tired this whole week and feel that I might not have been getting enough sleep. Could that have something to do with it?

Also, I put pineapple chunks in my protein shake this morning. I assume pineapple probably has a high sugar content, this is probably the most sugar I've had in over a week. Could this have sparked a sugar hunger?

Thanks for the advice guys. I guess I'll just tough it out.
I gave up cigarrettes and coffee cold turkey (although I am back on the coffee wagon), that was real painful to go through. I am sure that this cannot be any worse, if not easier.

Mind over matter
Mind over sugar
hmmmm sugar!!! I mean, no more sugar.

Most likely you have insulin sensitivity issues from eating refined sugars your whole life and going cold turkey is usually not helpful in the situation. Your carb cravings come from a problem cause by low blood sugar and low-endorphine levels.

First, you might want to consider introducing low-gi carbs in your diet that you can add throughout the day: oatmeal, yams, beans, green veggies. Look for around 100g low-gi carbs a day.

Second, add Pseven, 5HTP and Glutamine peptides to your diet. Pseven in conjunction w/ 5HTP would allow for a synergetic endrophin effect while Glutamine would allow for a low level of gluconeogenisis providing some glucose at a steady rate.

I, too, get this feeling. Two things come to mind:
1) it may be caffiene you are craving rather than sugar. I get this from time to time. Though caffiene is usually out of my diet, sometimes I just need to hit a diet soda.

2) Sweet tooth? Try Ultimate Replenisher - no sugar sports drink with 9g of carbs and a lot of other good stuff. Sometimes I use it when i really am tired of drinking water.

I get this with sugar every now and then also and I almost freak out trying not to eat it, crystal light helps a ton for me
