as you all know i stopped taking shakes last year this time when my boy who is d1 in lax came home natty 10% at 210, and not one player on his team is allowed to go over 10, nor do they take any whey at all. just steak 2lb ed. started doing that back last year and i was on eq. ive put on 20lbs i think since eating like that. at first i did steak but after the eq it got real hard to pound that much so i started to throw in fish more often. ive been doing a 1lb of salmon and .5lb steak .5 chicken and with the variety i can eat more, sometimes i'll go just two pounds of salmon though because fish does not fill me up at all. well now i know why dropping protein had no effect and i started growing so much. there is no doubt in my mind that with my metabolism i waste the protein from those shakes. with meat i do not waste it at all. 32g of protein in 5oz is nuts. 16oz is a pound so 1lb of that a day is 104g of protein right there. and 2lbs of it is 208g of protein or some shit. i might just start eating salmon only with a side of pasta and give steak a rest altogether. i had never looked to see how much protein was in it, but my girl is cutting down for a photo shoot, all natural of course, but she wanted to know what had more cals tilapia or salmon. so i researched it and tilapia has less than half the cals but nowhere near the protein, like 21g per 5oz. just thought i'd share. if you like it and can pound it like me its a damn good way to get your protein. i can't stand canned tuna, just ahi, salmon, tilapia and salmon and tuna sushi. i'd eat sushi every night but its so expensive.

I noticed the same thing when you drink the shakes you dont really see as good of gains as when you eat 6 meals with real food such as fish chicken or beef..

the body gets alot of vitamins and minerals from whole foods... you also force the body to secrete enyzms ,bile and all kinds of stuff to digest whole foods... the liquid shakes dont get the body to secrete all that stuff and before ya know it as fast as you drink um they go out the backdoor...

whole food is where its at. Fish is great salmon is great .

People use the shakes alot becuase they are cheap and a eazy fix becuase whole food like salamon cost 6-10$ a pound then a veggie.. when you could just chug a shake in milk for like 2$.

shakes are cheap thats for sure .. But once you switch over to whole foods your gonna see all kinds of gains ...dont get me wrong I do a shake of whey if i wake up at 3 am and dont wanna cook .but thats about the only time i use um now..

I have a even cheaper trick for a snack then shakes... take 4 eggwhites mix them up with a 1/2 cup of oatmeal mix in sum blue berries 1/2 table sppon of olive oil...put in the microwave for amount a minute and a half it gets giant like its gonna explode but then when it cools you have a custard like snack .fast eazy and its soild so its better then a shake for muscle building

I noticed the same thing when I switched as well. I still use the whey before and after workout, while I'm cooking and that's it. It's hard at first because your body isn't use to all the extra whole foods but after a few days and a few more etc... it becomes easier. Good post Bruce.

yes sir.....nothing but chicken, steak, and yellowfins tuna seared for me....getting my shred on after dropping shakes and cottage cheese and peanut butter....just meat veggie and oats with udos oil.....good post bro

I think there is some truth to both sides....but something like steak is going to have fat cals and protein...fat slows your metabolism...so are you absorbing the protein from the steak slowly? or shitting it out....I only drink ISOpure shakes and they are loaded with vitamins and BCAA...

How does fat slow down your metabolism? From my understanding when your body switchs from carbs to fat as its energy making compontent it boosts your metabolism?

Carbs actually slow down your metabolism more than fat

While it's true that dietary fat is more calorie dense, low GI carbs are the better source of energy. Since you're a paying member you can use the search function and look for posts by Wilson6. Read what he had to say on that topic to learn why. W6 is a very smart guy who had a lot to teach us on the subject of training and nutrition. Sucks that he's gone.
