Brian, seems to me, then, like simply a matter of definitions and terminology.
A powerlifter is someone who trains like a powerlifter. At least for me. I don't have extra respect for people who compete. If you say you bench 450, then I believe you, and you've earned my respect right away, because you know your stuff. I could care less whether or not you've entered the latest meet or not.
In fact, if you've done your research and you're dedicated but you squat 100 pounds you still have my respect.
I guess I'm just abiding by a false definition. Technically, most people would be weight lifters then. However, I've often found it more appropriate to define a noun by the adjectives that qualify it.
