b fold, needsize: I'm not going to use a lifting belt anymore

b fold and needsize have convinced me that if you have a healthy back, you don't need a belt. I think I have a healthy back but have been using a lifting belt as a crutch. I'm going to lower my weights just a bit at first to get accustomed to it. Hopefully I'll get stronger than ever.

Also, I'm going to try to gradually phase out the use of my lifting straps. I'm sure I'll need them for my final sets for a while, but I'll try to gradually ween myself off of them.

As a side note, b fold and his training methods did help to change how I looked at lifting when I first started coming to this board. He is proff that if you want to be big, you have to lift big with mostly compound movements.

Good stuff, congrats on joining the select few!

I use my belt on most of my big lifts, but waved goodbye for good to straps a long time ago. Heavy lifting+chalk+grip work does the job!

Yup. Straps and belts for heavy stuff only.

Equipment ...

Only use equipment when absolutely necessary! If you train with as little assistance as possible then your body will adapt more easily & quickly. Equipment is used for maximal lifts and to prevent injury. The only other time I can think of that equipment usage can be beneficial is breaking in new equipment (i.e. proper fitting of bench shirts, squat/deadlift suits, etc...). If you can improve your bodies ability to lift and then throw equipment into the mix when attempting maximal lifts you will reallly hit big PR's. Good luck!

You had to ruin it didn't you.

PS- my sister wears gloves. My calousses have callouses.

Well, the least I can do is wear gloves, since I'm not wearing anything else in the gym.

sounds like a plan man

frorider, check this out...

http://www.testosterone.net/html/123back.html

it has a plan for weaning oneself off of a lifting belt. it's the third part of the article. the whole article is a discussion on to use lifting belts or not to, and gets pretty technical. interesting stuff. if you want the other two parts, type in "beltless" in the search box and you can find all 3 parts.

i have never used a belt at all, but the article has sound advise. have fun dude.
