Ok.. thanks Aston.. so the sugar in milk is Lactose.. a more complex sugar made up of simpler sugars.. (glucos + galactos?) got it.

So I guess my next question is.. does Lactose have a pretty significant negative effect glyemically?

Sorry I'm so dense about this stuff.. I'm a financial analyst.. always struggled in science:confused:

just trying to get bigger and not get fat, like everyone else, and wondering if I shouldn't be drinkin' all this skim *sigh*.

Don't worry JKurz.. can't afford the low carb milk.. looked at the store it's $3.50 for half a gallon

Anyone have a link to a website with the different foods and their glycemic indexes? I used to have a link a couple years ago..

Milk containing lactose has a low glycemic index. In addition, the glycemic index of foods is effected by other mecrnutrients that are found in the food as well as other components of the food such as protein, fat, and fiber, all of which slow down your bodies absorption of glucose and hense slow reduce the glycemic rating of the food. Also combining foods reduces the glycemic rating of the MEAL. I.E. eating a PB sandwich which has protien, fat and carbs, will absorb quite slowly and have a lower overall GI rating than just the bread itself.

So, yes...its ok to have your skim milk. Its very economical and is an excellent source of protien

Humans are the ONLY species on earth that drink the milk of another animal.

Let that sit.

You meant "we're" also, not were, right??? Too busy mockin' me I suppose......

Aside from your smart-ass reply, the point was that it's not a natural survival tool of any other species. Humans can reason, yes, but many times our actions are indicative of uneccessary functions and practices.

Just look at your lovely President and his "reasoning" in his State of the Union address.

What i meant by reasoning is that, we domesticated animals that we are able to extract an elixer from that has an abundance of nutrition. Other animals lack the skills necissary to accomlish this. You cant expect a dog or wolf to run up to a sheep or a cow and strat sucking away at it aereolar region. Its just way to dangerous and downright stupid for the preditor to this rathor than just kill the animal. We on the other hand are able to extract the milk, make from it cream, butter, cheese and other dairy products, and then kill the animal and use it s meat.

So back to the original question which ii believe i answered. Unless you have the condition in which your bodies small intestinal epithelial cells have a decline in production of lactase-phlorizin hydrolase (LPH) enzyme, there is not reason for you not use milk in your diet. The previous disorder of LHP,otherwise commonly known as lactose intolerance, is caused by a genitc mutation that turns the LPH gene "off" shortly after infancy.

Hope this helps out your milk question.
