What the heck is a net carb? Is this a real number that can be used to count or is it just a gimmick by advertisers to keep people eating high carb foods? For example, bought some "low carb" peanut butter. Front label says, 9 net carbs. Back nutrition label says 17. Thoughts?

net carb = total carb - Non-Caloric and/or Non-blood Sugar Impacting Carbs (fiber, sugar alcohol)

:supercool

The jury is still out on how to count them, no FDA rulign.

The way I understand it, sugar alcohols are just slower digesting, but still will add up if you eat too many.

Well, the "net carb" thing was a term made up by Dr. Atkins cuz he didn't believe sugar alcohols affect blood sugar levels.....the consensus has not been proven yet as to whether or not it's true....they are still testing the theory....I only count total carb count less fiber......

Personally, it's B.S. to me.

Net carb should be Total Carbs - Fiber = Net Carb.

The sugar alcohol is a gimmick, and if your eating natural foods you really shouldn't have to worry about it.

It's a personal choice, I just don't eat the frankenfood stuff that has a lot of sugar alcohols.

the only reason atkins says that sugar alcohols are okay is because the body will utilize it quickly while not spiking insulin then return to ketosis afterwards
i only problem with foods that contain them is why to they need to contain so many different kinds of them

i use products containing splenda or stevia
