My doctor told me to stop eating tuna daily/// i eat 4-8 cans a day. He said that there is too much mercury in tuna and to eat it only one time a week or so. He recommended wilk alaskan salmon instead. Just though i would let you all know...

If you use light canned tuna it has much less mercury than albacore or chunk white. So the cheaper stuff is less hazardous to your health.

Good thread! According to the calculator I can have 3 cans per week of Light Tuna. I'm currently eating twice the amount. On top of that I eat other fish during the week. What exactly is the health hazard??

Mercury poisoning.....

And the light canned tuna has less mercury as it's made of smaller fish....the bigger fish = more mercury....

"Fatty" fish are what you have to worry about most when it comes to mercury. Swordfish, shark, tuna steaks, canned albacore tuna...those are of the biggest concern. Canned chunk light tuna, as stated a couple times already, has less mercury than the albacore.

In response to the original post...4-8 cans a day is alot of tuna. There is no way I could stomach that much tuna. As for your doctor saying to stop eating it...I disagree with that, but I would think cutting back to maybe 1-2 cans a day would be in your best interests. Most doctors would still probably recommend less than that.

this again???
okay jen could you do a search for the thread last year i covered this and link it here for me
thanks in advance

light canned tuna if pretty safe
then again the truth is everything in moderation
i personally can't eat more than a can a day
more like one every other day which is a reasonable amount

as for the fresh fish
ahi, albacore, tombo, shark, marlin, swordfish are larger fish and do contain a bit of mercury
it is still safe to eat these a few times a week
but you may have noticed most of them have a very dark vein that runs along one side
DO NOT EAT THAT
that is the blood vein and has the highest concentration of mercury and other imputities

the concern about mercury poisoning stemmed from a few years ago when a woman who eat fish twice a day 7 days a week became sick, had major hair loss, dry skin, blah blah all the things she was eating fish to prevent
once diagnosed and other similar cases it sparked a consumer watch

but look at most asian diets, they eat alot of fish eso the japanese
you don't hear about mercury poisonings in their society
the trick is to eat a varied diet and in moderation

i consume at least one portion a day more when wild pacific salmon is available
but i rarely eat the same type of fish two days in a row

try shrimp, good protein, very low fat
crab and lobsters are the same but pretty pricey
and i only eat them once in a while since i have something against eating scavengers but that is me personally

if anyone wants more info on this or other info feel free to pm me as i don't frequent this site as much as i used to unless on my daily forum report i see a thread on a subject i have passionate feelings about

Ya, mercury. I avoid eating more than two cans a week, usually only one. Salmon fillets and fish oil supplements. I found that per ounce of protein its cheaper to get frozen chicken breasts. I can get 3lbs for five or six bucks.
