Home Gym vs Real Gym

I just wanted to know how many of you actually went to a gym or had their own homegym and what equipment they had.

I have my own home gym with the typical benchpress and also a pullup stand with dips. I find i can do almost all exercises required for a full body workout but are there certain things that i am missing out on by not going to a real gym?

Post your place of workout and if a homegym user, what equipment.

How do you do heavy squats?

I have a problem with that too, unracking the bar is always the hardest part, along with re racking it

If I had a home gym, the first things I'd get are:
-Wide, sturdy power rack
-Barbell
-LOTS of plates
-Good sturdy bench.

That's really all you need, IMO. Other stuff I'd like to have:
-Glute-ham raise
-Reverse hyper
-Possibly dumbells

Sometimes i train at home with dumbbells, but i dont have anything for lower body stuff, so I only do it if the gym is closed or something. But, i dont think i would want a home gym anyway. I like going to the gym. I like being there with the other guys, having them yell at you during sets, getting all pumped and into the workout. Being alone in my basement sucks in comparison.

However, i think if you have family, a home gym is probably really good... that is, if you plan on seeing your wife and kids.

Of course, i dont got to deal with that yet, so its to the gym for me!!

-Fatty

I've tried both. I prefer lifting in the gym simply because there are too many distractions at home. I get a much better workout at the gym. It's easy to make excuses at home.

I've done both...
I trained at home for about 8 months... Unfortunately when I did this I was massively overtraining...
Training at home has its advantages and so does training at a gym

Home
-Put on whatever music you want
-Play the music as loud as you want
-You can use chalk(some gyms dont let you)
-You dont have to unrack the weight if your lazy
-Nice and close
-Can work out whenever you want, at whatever time of day

Gym
-Loads of equipment
-Lots of big dudes for motivation (if you go somewhere decent)
-Always somebody to spot you
-Way less distrations
-Some females (even tho thats not why i go, I don't mind the occasional piece of eye candy)
-Somewhere good to "get away" to

I personally prefer liftin in a real gym, just because I like being around other people(not for yackin), its much easier to get a spot, and seeing the biggest guys push big weights in the gym is good for motivation....

My 2 pennies

I'll never go back to a gym again. The drive time, the lame ass elevator music, the 95 lb dumbasses hogging the machines, the guys and chicks that use it as a dating service, the high school bambis and biffs that work there, the people that don't clean up the sweat off the machine........gyms just suck.

In my home gym, I have a Smith machine with upper and lower pulleys, preacher bench, and all the handles and accessories along with a great treadmill and bike. The next things I'm buying are:

Leg Ext/curl machine (tomorrow)
Hack Squat/Leg press sled (in about 1-2 months)
Assisted chin/dip machine (3-4 months)
Rowing Machine (6 months)

A gym gives you a huge variety so you can constantly rotate different exercises. Unless you have a ton of gear in your home gym, I don't thin you can match the variety.
