basketball probably allows you to hold more muscle because your jumping, moving, sprinting...its like a full body workout and HIIT combined.

Depends on your goals and how you like to do your workout i guess.

I play lots of basketball and i also use a ski machine, eliptical, and treadmill. All are used depending on my mood and how hard of a workout i feel i need to get in, along with how sore i am from the previous workouts.

I think its best to combine them all for best results, that way you arent stuck in a routine.

vs doing cardio on a machine that you hate.
 
they all burn excess calories where needed, I don't think any of them are 'superior' for fat loss.

I honestly can get just as lean if not leaner just through lifting + diet..
