Another back question

I haven't really had any problems with any of my body, no knee problems, nothin, but lately it feels like there's a muscle in my lower back, on the right side, that feels strained. Not _when_ I lift heavy things but after I've been doing it a while (my job at the moment is handleing manhole covers which are heavy as a bitch) it bothers me. Do I 1) relax for a long time until it heals totally (it usually goes away in about a day), or 2) start to work it out to make it become stronger?

or something else?

I would go to the Doctor, If you're fine then work out to make it stronger. If you use a belt On Back or Leg day stop, hinders your lower back from developing.

You must remember that in the event that you did pull a muscle in your back, it will take a good week at the minimum before it completly heals. You do not want to engage in activities that cause you to bend over repeatedly and put any any pressure on it because it will not heal and only get worse. Try sticking an ice pack on your back for 15-20 min before you go to bed for the nedxt few nights and take it easy for a while. After a few days stretch it out slowly and see how it feels. If you are still having probs, I would go see a doctor. Hope this helps

- Bad news bro, i have had strains/pulls that took 3-4 months to completely heal... and thats with therapy. I had a strained trap that was doing the same to me, only pain after the workout. Well, it eventually got much worse over the peroid of about 3 weeks and i ended up outta commission for 2 months.

My advice to you is to go to the doc asap and take it from there. Good luck and hope you feel better soon.

Heavy Weight Champ,
Thats why I said a MINIMUM of a week pertaining to a case in which he has a slight aggrevated pull. If it a major pull or even a tear to a major muscle which sounded like your case then you are right, it could take a while to heal and going to the doctor would be a smart thing to do. It is sad to hear about your problem and trouble with therapy. As an athletic trainer we give our athletes with back pulls ice/stim therapy and it takes anywhere from 4-8 weeks to heal depending on a number of factors of course. It shouldnt take 3-4 months with therapy unless you suffered a major tear. If you dont give your muscles a chance to heal or if you receive poor rehab then your condition could turn to chronic where it never quite heals and becomes pain free. I hope that you are close to normal now. Since I am not physically there to evalute this injury then I would be making just a guess. In that case putting some ice on the back and a visit to the doctor is the only thing you can do at this point.
