Anyone tried dorian yates system of 1 set to failure

Not to split hairs but it was Arthur Jones who supposedly invented it, then Mike Mentzer who popularized it, but whatever.

I've tried it and I got got good mass gains and a little strength gains for a while. The problem with the system is that every movement to total failure is very tough on the CNS, as well as being counterproductive for gaining strength over the long term if not the short term.

That's why Mentzer prescribed decreasing frequency of workouts as more intensity was reached. He had some of his trainees working out once every 7-10 days! When I had to go from 4 days a week to 2 days a week and I still felt overtrained and deconditioned at the same time I said enough of this shit, it's only good for a short period of time.

It's good to teach you the true meaning of intensity, and I still love me some 20 rep squats, but it's just one key on the keyboard, not the whole fucking piano, as some people like to think.

Only good for raw beginners and those training a LONG time

Yup. It makes a nice variation for long term trainers... but even Dorian didn't follow one set to failure for very long... contrary to popular belief.

I have his training video and I'll try and go through it by memory. Sorry if I make mistakes, but some jerk off I gave the tape to, lost it.

Monday Chest/Biceps
Tuesday Back/Rear Delts
Wednesday Rest
Thursday Legs
Friday Tris/Shoulders

I can't remember if he had one day off before starting the cycle again, or if he took both saturday and sunday off.

He usually has 2-3 warm up sets, but I wouldn't really call them warm up. Some of those sets are relatively intense. Its more of a combination of a classic pyramid, and heavy duty. For example, this is how he did Incline Presses.

135X12, 225X10, 315X8?, 405X7

I can't remember the exact number of reps, but it went something like that.

I used Dorian's method for about 8 months during my early lifting days (18-19) and I thought they worked good for me.

this method works best if you are on steroids

Is there a method that doesn't?
