Training: Stength vs. Looks

gwl9dta4 said:
The main difference in training for powerlifting is the type of exercises performed, rest periods which are ususally 5-10 minutes. Also the rep range is around 4-6. Sometimes less.

Generally speaking the way it goes is bodybuilders concentrate on the muscle contraction, pump and stretch while moving the weight. So therefore the weight is not of paramount importance as it is used as a tool to keep the muscles under tension for a specified period of time. Usually about 30-45 seconds.

Powerlifters on the other hand will concentrate on moving the weight itself. So the weight moved becomes of paramount importance, weight moved in good form. They concentrate on efficiency of movement and do not strive to keep the muscle under tension as it will cause them to loose strenght fast. Also this type of training does not foster the maximum muscle growth which is also beneficial when it comes to making and maintaining weight classes.

Hope this clarifies some.

very good answer.. one of the strongest guys I know pound for pound had 4.8% bf.. a former state champion wrestler.
so strength doesn't always mean fat.

the only powerlifters that look big and fat are the super heavyweights or the unlimited class lifters. All other power lifters that lift in their class are not fat at all because they have to make weight, they have to make weight while retaining as much strength as possible, they are lean and in some cases ripped. It is just that every body is used to seeing the super heavies that dont have to worry about making weight.

I like the way some powerlifters look....ie Ed Coan. I'd rather be strong as fuck and look pretty good at 230lbs, like Ed, than be half as strong but look like Ronne Coleman.

good point dantes. i prefer to be strong as possible (football), but i also like to look good and follow a good diet. I havent ate like shit forever
