Sodium NEWB

First of all love to say these forums are great and very informative. Thanks to all of you out there.

On the other note I have been starting a new diet plan and having a hard time finding information on daily sodium intake. what i have found is that " Most recommend not exceeding the range of 1,500 and 2,400 milligrams (mg) a day for healthy adults".

But what about adults that work out and train a lot should these numbers increase or decrease.

Personally I have cut sodium intake down quite a bit but is that ok? Is there a point where it could be to low?

Thanks in advance

tdoom1 thanks for the site just what i was looking for.

No problem. The only time i really worry about sodium is when I go out to eat with the wife. Thai, Indian, Chinese all wreak havoc on my water retention. For sushi I've switched to using vinegar instead of soy sauce and i like it better.

My diet Mon-Fri is really clean and I probably hit about 1000mg/day mostly from my bags of tuna

If you drink a ton of water (like you should be if you are lifting) then sodium intake isn't all that important unless you are watching your water retention. You'll piss most of it out anyway drinking 1-2 gallons of water a day.

I drink a gallon to two gallons a day. Its not so much that I worry about it for health reasons, I just hate that my fingers would get like sausages about an hour after eating sushi with about 3-4 tablespoons of light soy sauce. Distilled water seems to fix it pretty quickly but I switched to vinegar anyway. Without drinking a ton of water you are right it goes away in about 24 hours, but I just hate that water retention feeling. Thai, Indian, Chinese or going out to a really nice place in general for food usually the salt intake is way out of my normal range.

I guess some people are affected much more from salt than others. I don't really notice that kind of water retention at all, even when I eat salty foods, so I don't usually pay much attention to my salt intake. But, I probably take in way less sodium per day than most people anyway because I eat very clean and rarely add salt to food I cook. I prefer other spices.
