Morning dehydration

I drink about a gallon to a gallon and a half of water a day (not counting other water-based stuff I drink with meals like sugar free Tang or Crystal Light, caffiene free teas, jell-o, etc). I usually don't drink anything right before going to bed, and I notice that I wake up VERY dehydrated feeling in the morning (almost as if I had gone out drinking the night before--I have that horrible dry mouth feeling and everything.) I normally drink about a quart of water shortly after waking up (before hitting the gym for morning cardio) and the discomfort goes away.

Is there anything else that can be done or taken to stop this, or is it just part of the game? I try keeping a bottle of water next to my bed, but I sleep too deeply to wake up and drink water at night, despite the mild discomfort it causes.

I've been an athlete my entire life, but never had this problem before. In the past, I wasn't staying nearly as hydrated as I have been the past few months (I foolishly thought drinking a gallon of water, which was reccomended, would make me bloated and gain water weight).

ETA: while watching the women's olympic marathon, as the women passed one of the rehydration stations in the race, the commentators mentioned that the human body cannot digest more than a quart (32 oz) of water per hour. I had never heard this before and was wondering if it is true. (I normally drink a lot more than that in an hour @ the gym, especially during my long cardio days!)

not to worry you, but how much is your urine output?

you drink enough^^, it may be a good idea to see your doctor. dehydration such as you described is usually a sign of something more serious, such as diabetes :worried:

Sounds like you solved your own problem. Down a quart before going to sleep.

re: the commentators at the marathon, they don't know what they are talking about. Different people have different capacities and absorption rates. It takes about 30 minutes to absorb what you just drank, but don't use these or any other figures to determine NOT to drink when your body tells you TO drink.

i have this too... i sleep with water on my nightstand and always drink it throughout the night... get up to pee though every night, which sux cuz aim is all off. :P

I pee like every two to three hours or so when drinking that much water.

that sounds good! as long as output is sufficently aligned with input.

i agree with synpax then. but when are you seeing a doctor next? it'll be interesting to know why.....

do u eat a.n.p.b. before bed? if u do and it has salt in it, then this could explain a dry mouth feeling. not sure if it would make you feel dehydrated though.

Too m uch potassium ?

nope...and it's most likely not sodium. The only time I really have anything with a lot of salt/sodium is in my first two meals of the day (in my cream of wheat for breakfast and I have an ounce of almonds with meal 2)

I think maybe my body is just so used to having so much water intake throughout the day that it freaks out when it has to go for 7-8 hours with none...

i know that i'm kind of late joining this thread (!) but i'm having the same problem. it doesn't happen all the time. i thought it had to do with sugar/carbohydrate intake. but it seems to happen on an irregular basis. i live in the canary islands (spain). i'm irish and am in ireland at the moment so i'm not sweating at all! and it's happening now. last night i had houmous, salad and olives about 2 hours before i went to bed. i had no bread or sweet things... i sweated a little as i went salsa dancing but i drank water before hitting the sack. i don't nderstand...!!!
