Metabolism Gage

I've been hearing people say things that basically boil down to the following statement: "My metabolism is faster today (or speeding up) because I'm hungrier."

Personally, I've never thought of metabolism like that. These people are not really knowledgeable about those sorts of things, but I think there may be some correlation. What are your opinions about this statement?

Out in the real world.

ok, I know what you are talking about then.

you are right, these people really have no idea what they are talking about. I know a really fat lady who says that when she puts tabasco on her food, because she thinks it really really speeds up her metabolism.

there is also this guy... welll.. the point is.

when these people are hungry and think that their metabolism is faster on THAT DAY, that's pretty ridiculous. we know that it takes either a change in training methods or a significant increase/decrease in LBM to significantly affect your BMR... for instance if you gain 15 pounds of muscle you will be hungrier!!

usually out in the real world they are just talking about something they saw on the news the night before ;)

I don't know what the hell they were talking about, that's why I was so befuddled by their statement... I didn't know what to think, it was so rediculous ;)

Actually several things do raise your metabolism, I don't know about tabasco sause per say, but spicy food, caffeine, alot of foods like brown rice, etc, do in fact raise your metabolism. However the misconception is that it actually makes a difference. Really the level it raises your metabolism (and duration) is very small and unlikely to make a difference at all.

It boils down to this, if you are filling an indoor swimming pool with buckets of water, and there is a valve on a pipe in the ceiling that is over the pool that will drop 1 cup of water every 5 min into the pool. Despite having a small effect, wouldn't you open that valve to assist you in your task?

I mean, if your eating at taco bell every freakin day, tabasco sauce, green tea, whatever is not going to make a hill of beans difference. If your cutting on a good diet (or filling a pool), yeah, it won't hurt that's for sure.

the feeling of hunger can actually SLOW the metabolic rate... ever notice if you are really hungry and wait a bit, the hunger subsides? ... there is also a cortisol release associated with extended periods of hunger which with promote catabolism... bottom line, keep tupperware and shakes on ya at all times :D.
