It's a matter of good, better, best.

Good=salad + shake
Better=chocolate milk
Best=whey+dextrose

Why is it that most energy drinks (e.g., gatorade, powerade) contain predominantly sucrose, and only a small portion of dextrose.

Simillarly, why does Michael Phelps drink chocholate milk between races, and many atheletes (e.g., tennis players) will eat bananas while playing.

Don't they know that sucrose is half fructose, which will mainly replenish liver energy stores, or is the bodybuilding community misguided on this point?

Gatorade and Powerade are not recovery drinks, they are rehydration drinks. A better example of a recovery drink would be Biotest Surge. Chocolate milk doesn't give you the insulin boost that is required for rapid nutrient storage. Now they're talking about high molecular weight carbs.

I think why body builders and strength trainers care about this more than "normal" athletes is that muscle is their business. Small changes can have a big impact in their overall performance. For everyone else, chocolate milk is good enough.

Thanks for the help dudes...its been a while seen I've been here, got busy, and to be perfectly honest I forgot I posted this. I'll go ahead and try this out and see what happens. I tend to get hungry late at night so it will be hard to resist snacking; but it will be worth it in the end I suppose.

Question: How much time do you really have to workout in medical school? Is it hardly any time or do you just make time?

I'm finishing up medschool right now going into plastic surgery. The first two years of medical school are very easy to get a routine schedule going because you're mostly in the classroom (and class is optional for the most part). 3rd year will throw off your schedule while you're on your surgery, OB, and medicine clerkships. The rest of 3rd year and 4th year are a lot easier to get the workouts in.

And trust me, you don't want to be a PA.
