Food then shake post workout?

Dirty Workout

New member
I know that the typical knowledge is a shake post workout and then eat big meal about hour later. Problem is sometimes I dont get to gym until 9pm and if I get home and have big shake I am too full to shove food down throat (I have 24oz of carbs and 24 oz of milk/protein shake WOAH)

Is it THAT bad to have food first then shake after??

Do shake first then food after. Whey is a fast-absorb protein you need in your system when you're working out and immediately afterwards. After you workout, a slower-absorb protein such as casein is good because it prevents catabolism into the night.

Up to about an hour after your workout is the key time to intercept the anticatabolic processes initiated by your workout.

You need the high glycemic carbohydrates to create the necessary insulin spike to deal with the catabolic hormone, cortisol, and as Casual said, you need some fast absorbed protein to rapidly restore a positive nitrogen balance. A shake of Whey, preferably containing some easily absorbed di and tripeptide amino acids will be most effective at replenishing your depleted amino acid pool. (BTW, milk is not a good choice for this shake, as it slows digestion)

The problem with solid food is that you just will not get this influx of nutrients as it takes so much longer to be absorbed.

Can’t you take a shake with you to the gym to have immediately after your workout? That way as you travel home it will be being digested, so that by the time you are home you are ready for a solid meal.

Seriously, though, why not just drink it first? It takes about a half hour to an hour anyway to the point at which the most amino acids are available in the bloodstream. So if you drink it after, that's up to an hour when your muscles need protein and don't have it. Whereas if you do an hour workout and drink it first, the end of the workout will coincide exactly with the maximum amount of available protein. It really works beautifully. Then you can have solid food afterwards to prevent catabolism into the night.

The thing is... most people have difficulties training on a full stomach.... I know there are plenty of people here who would probably wind up puking up their shake due to their high intesity and the fact that it will bloat the shit out of you while working out...
But ifyou can handle it... doesn't seem like a bad idea

True, true. Well, my "shake" is just a scoop of whey in a half cup of water. But if you're blending in two scoops with some milk and a banana, yeah, can you say "bloated?" :)

Well to be honest, I have one about an hour and a half before (whey, casein and complex carbs) and one immediately after training (as outlined above), but then I do drink a lot of shake since they are two of many!!!

this has been gone over a lot, if you can stomach a preworkout shake, or even during, props to you.

personally, my workouts suffer if i can feel food in my gut

I seem to remember someone saying that if a shake is used before than blood will be diverted during workout into digestion instead of muscles
