actually, why the debate?

ANYTHING that gets your Heart rate to the requried point and keeps it there for the time you have alloted yourself to do cardio is good cardio.

Depending on how fit your cardiovascular system is, you might find it hard to get the bpm going in the bike or even the elliptical... for most people, though, running is a sure-fire way of getting the bpms up (I'm not a running advocate).

so what is for me the best cardio? the one that gets my heart beats up to the 150bpm range with the less perceived effort (if I'm crapping out from minute 5, chances are I won't make it to the last minute)

stationary bike or road bike, 80-100rpm with low-moderate resistance.

Track and stair sprints for me.

I do 10 sprints on the turf and I usually mix up the lengths, but none less than 40 yds. The other session I do quick steps up the stairs and double stair sprinting alternating each.

Sprinting on turf is not that hard on you at all because the surface is spongy and softer than a treadmill. Neither is running UP stairs imo because even though the knee has a good deal of force on it you are generating momentum uphill and thus aren't slamming your body so much.

I think alot of people have issues with running because they either A. run on concrete which is fuckin dumb, B. don't know whether there feet pronate or supinate and haven't bought a pair of "running" shoes that are designed for their foot type, C. work into it too quick not realising that until the body gets used to the plyometric nature of it you have to tone it down at first and build it up, and D. do endurance running which SUCKS because it does weaken your legs and is alot of repetitive impact whereas sprints are the opposite.

Also, elliptical and cycling may be great for steady state cardio, but you'll run like a slug compared to a sprinter because your body can't deal with any type of plyometric exercise.

Just my opinion.

I do elliptical 60 mins. I dont run to save my knees. SPinning class kicks ass too I'll be looking to incorporate it into my routine next week.

I too loathe cardio, but I'd have to say nothing beats a nice jog outside, in the fresh air, with the world bustling around you. Also, since it's an actual path, visual cues keep my mind a little busy tracking progress instead of looking at a stupid ticking clock. I like eliptical in terms of the exercise itself, but it's so damn boring being in the same position, staring at a wall or TV.
