Ok I know I don't know a whole lot, but c'mon!! Another board I'm on is for diet & fitness also. A woman who says she is a bodybuilder asked for advice on losing the last couple pounds thing. She was given advice on creating a calorie deficit for the week equal to 1 pound/3,500 calories & what is your bmr? She said she was tested at 2,000 cals per day/approx. She was then told that was too high & to eat no more than 1,400 cals per day. She claims to have competed at 8% bf before and seemed to accept this advice!

I jump in like whoa whoa whoa! & told her to come here. ;)

I just thought down cutting to 1,400 calories a day was a bit low especially for someone who lifts 4x per week + sprints + jogging. Plus, these are people who post daily "I can't lose weight cuz I ate a pint of Ben & jerry's last nite so what do I do?" saying to basically not eat. I don't always do what I'm supposed to but I just thought their advice was way off.

Well, it would depend on one's weight/ composition really. (the 1400 cal)

Reduce your daily calories by 500 (3500 per week) and add some extra cardio - one would most likely lose weight.

3500cals/7 days= 500/cal per day

if shes trying to drop 1lb per week, she would take 500 cals off her maintenance. keep in mind BMR and maintenance calorie intake are not the same. BMR is your resting metabolic rate (amount of calories burned doing absolutely nothing) add in activity requirements and thats how you get maintenance cals.

i see nothing wrong with what they told her.

If her bmr was tested (this can be done) at roughly 2000 cals, and she is active, 1400 would seem a bit low. However, jenscat, you have to bear in mind that getting into contest condition requires a very extreme diet. This is probably what she will eat for the last few weeks. For my first show, I ate 3000+ the entire diet, but the last two weeks (just before my final carbup) I had to drop down to 1500 to get ride of the last bit of bodyfat and to deplete my muscle glycogen enough to drop enough water, and to get the supercompensation effect I wanted from the carbup.

I doubt her BMR was tested at 2000. I have 160+ pounds of LBM and mine wasn't even tested that high. 1400 represents AMR - deficit. An AMR of 2000 is probably about right.

I have 160+ pounds of LBM

Holy Cats. Thats at least 20lbs more than my BW.

As for BMR, clarify that for me please guys. Isnt that the absolute minimum number of calories a body burns in 24 hours if they theoretically slept around the clock? And AMR is BMR + some estimate of daily average calorie expenditure? What are the guildlines for estimating both?
