Everytime I do one of the machines that is supposed to work your back I don't ever feel it in my back... Am I doing something wrong? Also, can anyone recommend a good protein shake?

And I'm soo proud of myself!!! I actually have been able to drink a gallon of water!! WOOHOO!!:D

Thanks!

I have always been the same way with back workouts--never truly felt like I did much lifting. But you are.

My husband is the same way, and last night, we did back, and I showed him incline dumbell rows. We had always done it with a flat bench; anyway, he is sore today, like never before. I feel something when I do those. And it was so nice to know I could teach an old dog a new trick :D

Use the assisted pull up machine also......they are sooo good for working the back.

Remember also, on the machines, to do slow movements, keep your head up, and squeeze your back at the top of each rep.

Isopure shakes......choclate......mmmmmmmm :)

for your back, you have to really use the mind muscle connection... otherwise your arms (bis) and delts end up doing most of the work.. you need to think of your arms as levers for your back... hooks if you will...

Training a muscle you cannot see is more difficult... have to 'feel' the lats contract before the arms bend, pulling shoulders back & down, elbows back. open up chest at top of the movement sqeezing rhomboids/shoulder blades...

also helps to practice lat spread posing in am mirror (when no one is looking or at home)... I don't want to be one of those we see always posing in a mirror at the gym :supercool:

If you are not sure of your form, get a trainer or someone at the gym to help you. Like on a cable row - execute good form by holding your back up, and throwing out your chest, pulling with your back. If you can identify that feeling, maintain that type of form for all back exercises. Then you should start to feel it -- and not be sore in other parts of your body like shoulders or arms. I also use wrist straps so my hands dont' get tired under heavier weights.

You do need to really concentrate and go slow with machines for the back. I know when i've gone to heavy, cause I can't feel the squeeze / burn in the movement. Focus, concentrate and don't think about the weight.

SOmetimes I even use the cable pulleys with NO pin in the rack! hahahahah Mostly for triceps though! I'm such a pansy! NOTTTT!

My opinion.

Most people do not have very much back muscle without training. It is hard to work or squeeze a muscle that you do not have. As I have gotten larger I can easily squeeze my back muscles now.

Here is what I suggest. Stick with simple and compound muscles for the back. If you can't isolate the lats with a row or a machine of some sorts...don't do them. Try pull downs, some simple type of rows, and deadlifts. Deadlifts should be the main exercise that you focus on.

This is just my opinion. Any other ideas?

Hope everyone understands what I am trying to say on here.
