whores

I don't know - it seems kind of sad.

I know back in the day artists such as Loutrec (well, Henry Toulouse-Loutrec) would sit in bars and paint the absynthe drinkers as they sank into their drunkeness.

And I know that degas was always painting ballerinas - and in those days that was actually considered on the level of whores...

so I wonder if I can find an artist today that is covering the tragic plight of the crack whore...

you left out van gogh. he lived with a prostitute for a while, and painted picture(s) of her crying.

hmmm. ice cube and other 'urban composers' have sang ballads about the lowly freebase hustler. but no pictures, to my knowledge.

in the art history classes I took, we learned it was on an absynthe binge that he cut his ear off and mailed it to the woman he thought was his girlfriend and left him - that prostitute your refer to.

most all of the impressionists were doing absynthe so they say. the way you see the world when on it is supposedly much like an impressionist painting.
having never done it, I can't say. but I have painted before.

i've also heard theories on him being bipolar or schizophrenic... i watched a program on it a long time ago so i can't recall what they said anymore...

the absynthe theory is intriguing though.. i've never hallucinated or anything under the influence of anything so i can't say i see things that way when i paint.

no, i'm referring to sien, who was sketched in the painting 'sorrow'.
i think the prostitute he sent his ear to was someone else. :gift:

i'm not familiar with specific prostitutes with van gogh... can you post me a link to it?

yeah - nordstrom is right.
he lived with one prostitue - painted her, but sent the ear to a local one:

as for the schizophrenic and absynthe theories - they can't really prove any of them, but they are looking at his writings and such.
there is a varient type of schizophrenia where there is intense ringing in the ears - and they think the absynthe either started or ampllified the effect and he cut off his out ear in attempt to get rid of it.
this was when he was most depressed and did some shit like the crows over the field if I recall correctly.

sounds like a fun guy - one of his girlfriends attempted suicide while with him.

absynthe causes brain damage so maybe :)
