Personal Training Career?

Hey gang, are any of guys personal trainers, full time? I love being in the gym, but am not sure I can make enough money doing it full time. I am currently a systems consultant with a medical softeware company, but am not real happy. Aside from owning your own personal training business? Is it a career with good potential? Thanks in advance..

My wife is a PT and we live in smalltown, Al. She does O.K. but could not support our family if quit my job. She also has time to homeschool our kids. So, keep that in mind. If you live in a large city you may do better.

My wife is a PT and works between two upscale health clubs. She does ok, but is not happy with the pay. She would not be able to support the both of us on her salary. I think in order to make big bucks as a trainer, you need to train real athletes and pros. Thats where the money is. And for that, you need a masters or phd. Trust me, we researched on some of the local top trainers and they have education out the azz.

Diamonddice........you are 100% CORRECT. In NYC, you could look like S**T an still make MINIMUM $75 an hour. In Jersey, just a little less, but, $50 an hour and working 20 hours a week is still GOOD $$$. I have a friend in Pittsburgh that cant make a living at it and he's an NPC Nationally ranked bodybuilder. In Los Angeles, Miami, San Diego, New York City, NORTH Jersey (south jersey is kinda low-scale) you'll make great money at this career. Anywhere else, all they care about is drinking beer and watching sports. Ya gotta go where the MONEY is made my man. My old friend looked like hell.....skinny legs, skinny arms and even had a gut on him. He was like 5'8" and 175 with like 20% bodyfat and he was a PT in NYC. This bastard made over $1500 a week and drove a Mercedes. Kinda pisses ya off, eh? Good luck my man, and, the key to getting clients is: ADVERTISE!!!!!!!!!

It all depends on location and number of paying clients. You can have a lot of clients, but if they are only coming once or twice a week for sessions you wont make jack. You wont find too many people to pay $75-150 per hour and come for 4 sessions a week and you are able to keep that client for more than a few weeks. There are co-workers of my wife that make $45,000 - $65,000 per year, but they have no life. Their hours revolve around their clients hours, so they are there from 4 a.m. to 10p.m. just to make that amount.

My wife and I are both personel trainers in a smaller community. (50,000 approx) we do quite well. Many of our clients are medical proffessionals and we work with five college profs and the graduate Dean from the local university. Many of our people have been training with us for five to six years. I believe in as little turn over as possible with good clients. I have a BS in health education, a BS in biology and a phd in an unrelated field. So I do have a fair educational background. My wife and I are competive bodybuilders so we tend to be in fair shape year around. I gave up a good paying state job to start personal training full time. My wife was a cosmetologist. We are also certified in personal training by a few different org. Good luck
