Oh, Those monthly cravings!

Yeah, That time of month is coming up for me next week and a week or 2 before, I usually crave carbs and sugary foods but avoid them as much as possible and try to eat something that is healthy yet will take away that craving. Anyone else get these cravings before or during this time of the month? I hate it big time LOL!

There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with giving into cravings occasionally. In fact, it can HELP your diet. The goal is to satisfy the craving without going overboard. Giving in every now and then will help reduce the chance of going nuts during a craving.

The concept of pre-comp "food is fuel only" and not eating for enjoyment is great and all, but certainly not realistic for people who are choosing NOT to compete. If you are NOT competing, then do not feel bad about "giving in" every now and then. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with enjoying food, life and wanting so-called "bad foods". Life is about moderation and personal choices.

Some things that may help cravings, but not break the diet are:

FF SF Pudding, you can even mix in some protein to make it a little healthier
Fresh Strawberries with FF Cool-Whip
Fudgesicles or popsicles

With this contest prep, I'm at the point now where I just don't care what my food tastes like. I eat cuz it's time to & I'm supposed to & it's on my list......

Sorry Jen, you know I love you and this is not meant as a slight against you, but I do not see how this is helpful to her. Her questions was about healthier ways to satify cravings.

Not everyone is eating to compete, and I think reading something about how someone else is "above cravings" can only make someone feel inferior. Like "wow, she can do it but I can't, I must be somehow be a weak person"

Just my opinion (albeit, hormonal opinion, lol).

It was more or less a reminder of me being in contest prep just in case they check my log & think "Oh I should be doing exactly that, etc." Plus I guess it was relief that I don't have to deal with it too much anymore - cuz I can relate to wicked cravings. It wasn't my intention to try to be superior and if anyone felt that way, I apologize.

My opinion on contest prep is that it is NOT a lifestyle nor recommended for everyone. I agree with you that there are healthy & satisfying ways to help cravings without going overboard.

Oh and high-quality chocolate (so rich you can only eat 1 piece) should also help when you NEED chocolate. Plus if you get dark choc. it has those antioxidants that are good for you!

Oh I know you were NOT meaning to sound "holier-than-thou" - I know that is not you. :) And maybe NOBODY else took it the way I did, which I truely hope.

I just know that when you already feel "down" on yourself or somehow deficient, sometime hearing other people great successes can make you feel worse. Yes, seeing/hearing about others success can also HELP tremendously - but it can also do the opposite.

I think in someone who is obviously still struggling with food issues - and with a history of eating disorders - the feelings of inferiority can really be strong.
