Metabolic damage- I learn...

Hi ladies,

I've read about metabolic damage from Scott Abel. I absolutely agree, dieting, overexercising can damage nervous system and many doctors don't know how to deal with it. I believe I'm an example. Dieting, overexercising, long term low carb meals messed out my metabolism. I know you girls gave me many advices in the past in my previous posts and I know I was stupid and did not listen. It was not to ignore the advices, but the phobia from adding more calories, eating more..etc. That's why I don't see any results. I have also been on many different thyroid medications , different dosages, I have done tons of blood tests and... still mystery. Tests looks OK, but I don't look OK. What a nightmare.

I would like to know, if someone has experienced this problem or know someone with issues like that, can give brief advice how to fix it. I understand this is a process and nothing happen overnite, but still, there is some smart way. Is it better gradually work out the calories and lift weights, skip cardio completely or set the cal range and combine cardio with weights?

thx

I'm with ya girl or so it seems. You can see my thread titled frustrated ,,, I'm in the process of doctor shopping and logging absolutely everything.

BTW I trust your hormonal system might be messed up but your nervous system is fine. ;)

And I think it's all about weight training and gaining as much muscle mass as possible that will be part of the solution. But, the ladies and men here know more than I do and will chime in.

Oh and personally, I think it's all about gaining muscle mass and not the cardio. But, the ladies here know more than I and will chime in.

Hi,

yes, keep posted. I have already cut cardio sessions and I still want to cut more, so that I'll do only 2 in a week.

Also one more thing. I have done saliva cortisol test in the last few months. I came out actualy abnormal first thing in the morning cortisol was LOW, but than 3 months later I went to have done blood test for cortisol in the morning and it came out slightly elevated. Since, I have tried many things cortisol could be another possibility of my mystery.

My personal motto is back to the basics. Sometimes I think we tend to over think things and look for reasons, when we should focus on eating and exercising within reason. Chronic and long term under eating can take up to a year to fix. Unless there is something medically wrong, the answer lies in the diet. I believe that 100%.

hi caligirl85, thx for coments, I already feel on my clothes they are tighter uhhh, i have added calories and im still not where i should be. i have reduced cardio and started to focus on weights. is it normal? i always freaking out when this happens. :(

Sasa..I haven't followed all your posts over the last few years so not entirely sure of your history but it is normal to gain a bit when adding in calories. What you could do is slowly add them in. 100-200 and hold that for a few weeks and then do some more. Scott Abel believes in taking complete time off the gym and off the diet (eating at maintenance for a couple of weeks)..I see him often say a 2 week period but that can be VERY difficult for us. I'm no different then everyone else. I don't like seeing the scale go up!!

I wouldn't get rid of cardio completely, especially since you are really concerned about the weight gain but I wouldn't do it every day. 3-4 times a week would be a good balance. Focusing on weights is a good thing too. Muscle mass will burn more calories post workout and it just improves our overall health.

Also remember that carbs hold water so if you are increasing carbs and you've been a long time low carb eater, you're going to gain water weight. It's the same idea as gaining weight after a big cheat day. I can gain up to 5 lbs after a bad day of eating but it'll be gone in a few days. Once your body evens out and starts functioning more efficiently, that water weight will take care of itself and the scale will start moving again.

It's a tough road! I'm just in the process of re-starting too. Gonna start up a log and hopefully we can all motivate each other and keep learning together. :)

I agree w Cali. Good advice.

If you want, start a log. It's a good way to make sure you stay on top of everything, and we can be there for moral support. :-)
