ME/DE and athletic training...

b fold the truth

Elite Strongman

Well, I was wondering what everyone would suggest for basic athletic training for someone who was "in season". If they only had two days to lift...would it be dynamic or max effort days?

As I prepare for my contests...events become much more important than lifting so I focus the majority of my time on them. It is hard for me to do both a ME and DE day.

Bob Youngs did a strongman contest (swore to never do another) but only did dynamic days while lowering the percentages to 45% on the box squat and bench press. Any thoughts or ideas?

Which is more important to athletic training?

Full body workouts would be my suggestion.

It truly depends on the athlete, what fuel source is primarily used, etc....

My suggestion would be to stick with the dynamic effort days. They emphasize power, which is more important than max strength in most sports.Your event training will probably take care of most of your strength needs. Also, after your speed work, you can always work up to a heavy single or double.Just my opinion.

If you're training the events for a strongman competition, I would recommend sticking to core training and GPP in addition to your strength training.

I have actually combined the two, where one day was a me day for the bench and a de day for the squat, and then had one other day where the reverse occured. It was not all that much fun. If I had to choose between the two, I would go with DE as you are getting a lot of CNS recruitment from all of that other heavy crap that you do. You could always take a heavier single in the squat and bench following dynamic workouts.

Right now I train like this...

Sunday:
ME lower then Events.
Events include log press overhead which I consider my ME movement.

Wednesday:
DE lower

Friday:
DE upper

As the contest nears...I will lower the %'s I use on DE days and decrease the effort I give on ME lower days so that I can focus more on my events.

I would stick with the normal routine. But instead of doing ME for upper and lower body do events. Then continue doing your normal DE training. This should give you the best of both worlds.

I totally stopped doing my ME work for my last contest and was in great shape...but felt that I lacked a bit of base strength come contest day. I'll adjust as needed.

Any other thoughts?
