Calories

Anyone know how many calories your body has to have before it goes into starvation mode? Also if you burn say 600 cals per day with cardio would you subtract that from the total and eat more cals to compensate. I am 6'0 210 right now, I asked all the trainers at my gym this question and there looked at me like i was speaking russian or something. Thanks much.

If you burn 600 cal. a day and you do it atleast 6 days in a row then you could loose a pound every 6 days. That is if you are consuming calories equal to or slightly less than your BMR. some could say the BMR for you is around 1800 - 2100. but everyone is different. You lacked one thing. your GOAL. To me it seemed like you are trying to eat at a starvation mode

Figure out the total amount of calories that your body needs for maintenance (roughly body x 12). If you are trying to loose weight/fat, eat this amount of calories daily and let the exercise create a deficit rather than trying to eat less than maintenace calories.

My goal is to loose as much fat with the absolute least amount of muscle loss.

Take your body weight and multiply it by 12 and that is your daily total cals for maintenance. Meaning that if you did not nothing but lay on your ass all day and ate that amount of calories, you would not gain or loose any weight.

Figure out what your nutritional goals are and determine the percentages of each macro you want to take in. The most common one is the 40/30/30, 40% of cals from protein, 30% from fat and 30% from carbs. Start out with this ratio, once you understand a little more then you can change the macro ratios around a bit.

Like I said above, let the exercise create the calorie deficit rather than eating less than maintenance calories. This is the best way to loose fat and maintain muscle. Although it is hard to gain muscle while trying to loose weight, it can be done. However, you are best off doing one first, then the other.

Hope that helps.

Do not go 40/30/30 if you are trying to cut without losing muscle. You need to drop the carbs and upp the fat. Try taking in lots of good fats.

If you were in starvation mode, wouldn't your metabolism slow down to compensate?

yes
That's not a good idea

Lowering your calories intake a little is less catabolic than eating just 500 cal a day
