trouble at t'gym, advice wanted (again!)

I have to agree with Jdarty about bands and chains. You're never too weak to use them -- accomodating resistance will help any lifter -- it's just a question of how much band tension / chain weight you use.

I've just been inspired - watched the Scottish Powerlifting Championships today. The top female squatted 125 (275lbs), benched just under 60kg (c. 130lbs) and deadlifted 140 (300lBS or so). She was about 65kg in BW.

This time next year, I am a) entering that competition and b) aim to make those totals. If possible.

Also got to see the big guys squat 600lbs and over. sheesh. Amazing!

personally, I think for the non-gear, non-denim wearing powerlifter some hybrid system of periodization and Westside as
yet not fully evolved will be their best bet for training. Ive been tinkering on it myself.

You say that your form needs work. I think it is a good idea to have a "coach" help you with that. However, you said that the Uni Coaches disagree with using the gluts/hams to squat...I wonder what kind of squat form advice you would get from them???

Just a few points seeing as you mentioned this......I'm sure that you are aware fo these things. I just quoted you as you happened to mention the coaching.

1) Judging at powerlifting meets in the UK is very very tough. If this club are winning the titles they have, then the coaching will be very good.

2) People in the UK do tend to squat with a narrow stance.......and there are some people who put up some very big numbers doing this (despite the harsh judgin over here).

3) There is more than one way to squat.......its a matter fo finding what works for you.

Circusgirl, I think you have made the right choice in giving the coaches a chance. If it doesn't work out, maybe you could intorduce the coaches to some new ideas at a pace that they will handle (too many ideas too quickly is more likely to get regjected). Good luck.
