Stick with 5x5 or switch to OVT while cutting.

I finally get to start cutting in just two short weeks, after three months of eating like a horse. Other than getting my diet plan together I'm trying to decide what lifting routine to use. I got my basic diet plan ideas from a testosterone mag article by a guy named Christian who I'm sure most of you have heard of. In his article he states that the best way to hold onto lean mass and strength is to keep with a high intensity low volume lifting routine. He boosts his OVT training program that he designed, but I love the 5x5 so much I'm afraid to let it go. I do plan to alter the routine and pick new lifts for each body part but stay with the 5x5 style. Any thoughts or experience would be appreciated.

Stick with the 5x5. It has lower volume and does the progressive load thingie, neither of which OVT does.

This is what you're referring to, correct?

Here's a sample chest and back day:

A1. Bench press 5x5
A2. Flat dumbbell flies 5x5
B1. Incline bench press 5x5
B2. Incline dumbbell flies 5x5
C1. Lat pulldown 5x5
C2. 1 arm rowing 5x5
D1. Bent-over barbell rowing 5x5
D2. Seated cable rowing 5x5

He means for all this to be performed on one day?!? That's 20 sets of chest and 20 of back for 40 total sets. Can you say overtraining? To think he did this while dieting is ridiculous.

Thanks for the reply casual, it seemed like a crazy training routine for a dieter. I take it your a fellow 5x5 believer, or just not a fan of high volume?

If you're around 12% BF (male) than 5x5 would be a optimal routine. It'll allow you to maintain LBM (or even gain), continue with strength gains.

I know, I followed it for 6-weeks and made unbelievable gains (LBM/strength) while watching my physique lean up. Very nice.

After 6-weeks of 5x5, definitely consider OVT. I've heard of some fantastic progress by others who are following this program.
