Shirted up...

Today was DE bench day. We have planned to test out our shirted max on 4/27, so I wanted to get in the shirt, since I really only used it at the meet last month and wanted to get a feel for it.

So I did only 4 triples on speed, no bands. Then did two heavier raw singles. Put the shirt on and did this(PS- no these aren't kilos, my bench is that low, lol):

Bodyweight- 150 lbs

205x1(no touch)
225x1
245xmiss(weak ass triceps)
235x1
240x1

My best lift at the meet last month was a 240. However, after watching the tape of the meet I was pissed that I didn't pause it. Itwas an obvious touch and go, but in the unsanctioned meet the judge lt me have it. So today I worked on my pause. Every set was an obvious, clean pause. The good thing is I was getting a great drive off my chest, good speed. The 240 today was perfect. Good pause and solid lockout. 240 at the meet took forever to lockout. So I am happy about that. I want a 250 when we max.

I realize I should not have missed today, but I really wasn't sure where I was at. I think the program Jay helped me with that I am going to start in 2 weeks will help me a ton because I seem to be failing right where I'd be pressing off the boards. Really need that tricep power.

Well i can promise you your bench will go up. Is your shirt tight enough? Does it pinch down at the bottom? How did it help you in relation to your raw bench?

Just keep pounding it. I remeber doing singles in a poly yrs ago with 385lbs now , well. My point is you train hard, you train right. It will move up. So enjoy the growing process and treasure all the PR'S. You start hittin them tris it will fly up. But you definitly undrstand the concept of what needs to be done. I say that cause you identilfied were you failed in relation to board size. That is what we do. So get some boards today, and freakin make a 2 , 3 , 4 ,5 board and use them. No excuses. Go now!

Jay- my shirt feels tight as fuck, but I know it needs to be tighter. We got me in it pretty quick today. I actually got it a little bit big because I knew I was gonna start bulking and moving up a weight class. If I paused my raw bench, I wouldn't be within 20-30 lbs of my shirted bench, so it definitely helps.

The boards, I have a 2,3 and 4 already. Buying the wood to make the 5 this weekend. :D

I start your program on 4/29 and I can't wait!

Seems like your already on the right track....
But all I can say is PL jay knows his sh!t!! I am probably doing a similar routine which focuses on LOTS of tricpes and board presses and although its only been about 2 weeks, I can already notice a difference!!! :D So just pound them tri's hard and you will start puttin up those big weights!!!! :fro:

you're probably getting all the right advice from pljay but i thought i would add this.

i hope you are using a poly. i dont think denims are effective with anything under 500. i say that because if you have them tight enough, it will take 500+ to get the weight down. The new open back style denims that the westside guys are using are even worse. i couldnt get 640 down to my chest.

Poly's will allow the weight to go down a lot easier. Also, have you ever used an open back poly for taking some weights in training?

just get a cheap $40 inzer shirt, cut it down the back and slip your arms in it. obviously you wont get as much as you will with your real shirt BUT you wont have to spend 20 minutes getting into a shirt and ruin the rest of your workout plus you will get a little extra omph for your heavies.

Irish again i agree with you .

No need for denim yet. If you get some strong tris yu can go tighter in denim and the only thing that limits your bench is your tris.

I have a shirt that i couldnt get 660 to touch all the way. The sky is the limit when it comes to shirts. SO i would do what irish said in trainnig. Good idea! And when you get in the 300's you can get a denim that fits exact and you could get alot out of it. Grimmer did good with this technique. His bench is creeping up on 400 with shirt. And he got it to fit exact. So my advice for first time denim users is go exact. You can go tightr as you get stronger.

If you did get denim you could use it this way but the carrover would be about the same 30 to 40 lbs.

Woah, nobody said anything about denim. :D

Actually, I was thinking of having my buddy go denim with his next shirt. Right now he just has the basic $40 blast single poly and can hit a 405-425 in it. His triceps are damn strong though, so I think he would take wll to denim. He's thinking about it.

Never hought about that open back poly. If I were to do that, would I get on a little smaller than I have now, since it would be easier to get into? Also, woud I just cut it halfway? all the way? Thanks
