Michael Phelps Diet

Swimming sensation Michael Phelps has an Olympic recipe for success - and it involves eating a staggering 12,000 calories a day.

"Eat, sleep and swim. That's all I can do," Phelps, who won two more gold medals today, told NBC when asked what he needs to win medals. "Get some calories into my system and try to recover the best I can."

By comparison, the average man of the same age needs to ingest about 2,000 calories a day.

Phelps, 23, will swim 17 times over nine days of competition at the Beijing Games - meaning that he will need all the calories he can shovel in his mouth in order to keep his energy levels high.

Phelps' diet - which involves ingesting 4,000 calories every time he sits down for a meal - resembles that of a reckless overeater rather than an Olympian.

Phelps lends a new spin to the phrase "Breakfast of Champions" by starting off his day by eating three fried-egg sandwiches loaded with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, fried onions and mayonnaise.

He follows that up with two cups of coffee, a five-egg omelet, a bowl of grits, three slices of French toast topped with powdered sugar and three chocolate-chip pancakes.

At lunch, Phelps gobbles up a pound of enriched pasta and two large ham and cheese sandwiches slathered with mayo on white bread - capping off the meal by chugging about 1,000 calories worth of energy drinks.

For dinner, Phelps really loads up on the carbs - what he needs to give him plenty of energy for his five-hours-a-day, six-days-a-week regimen - with a pound of pasta and an entire pizza.

He washes all that down with another 1,000 calories worth of energy drinks.

Phelps remains on course to at least equal Mark Spitz's record of seven gold medals won at the 1972 Munich Games.

At these Summer Games, a typical day for Phelps starts with a 5 a.m. wake-up call. Most of his races have taken place between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. ET when in China - 12 hours ahead of East Coast time.

i wonder what designer drug he is using.

i'm sure we'll have access to by 2020.

I doubt he's using. He basically spends his entire day swimming, so he's tweaked his metabolism into the stratoshpere. Must be nice to work out for a living.......:whatever:

man hes skinny...hes not doing drugs for sure...great fitness though he has

And some people here have a hard time eating 4000 cals a day...

that guy must be a sick fucking machine, like all of those elite athletes. although, apparently he is on another level. i know shit about swimming, though. i'm more of a shuffleboard or bocce kind of guy.

ceo, getting 4000 calories a day is easy. getting 4000 clean calories a day is much harder (for me).

if i ate all them carbs ..id blow up like a balloon. diet dont work for me

I will need to check on this for confirmation and accuracy.

Michael Phelps is participating in an anti-doping program that involves having blood and urine samples taken once a week.

These samples are also being stored for eight years.

I believe this is a part of the WADA new screening program that is monitoring the 'normal' blood samples of elite athletes to see what is normal, so if PEDs are taken, patterns in the biochemistry and haematology will be more readily identified.

He truely is a genetic freak.

I don't know about you, but I really love when I hear about things like this.

man, so if I were to swim 5 hours a day, that means I could eat 6 whole pies, a box of snacky cakes and a deep dish meat lover's pizza every day. Sign me up!!!

Oh wait, I already do. Nevermind.

U swim?

They said his bf is 4%

He was also talking about when he joined his new coach and training team like a year and a half ago that the trainer had him start lifting weights and it was the first time in his life that he had ever touched a weight.

He's also double jointed everywhere, knees, elbows...

They were also breaking down his figures on ESPN and talking about how his wingspand is so much bigger than it's suppossed to be and how large his hands and feet are.

Also, how his muscles only generate half as much latic acid buildup during swimming as other swimmers.

Yea..... I think it's just the new suit technology....

Doesn't surprise me. The US Rowing Team trains here. They practice 8 hours per day. I hear gymnasts do the same thing. Swimming is extraordinarily taxing; it's the only thing I hate more than running. So, if he's doing that for 7 to 8 hours per day and giving 100%, he needs every calorie he can get. This kid needs no juice. He genetically blessed and works out in a way that 99% of the population, including everyone on this board, never will.

That would be great to eat like that and not get fat.

I read in the newspaper today that he consumes anywhere from 8,000-10,000 calories a day.

He has to be burning off a ton of calories, must be nice to be 23 and eat whatever you want and not get fat. :worried:

The strange thing is pro cyclists ride 100+ miles a day 7 days a week but they eat less than half that because they're so paranoid about having to drag even an extra 1/2 lb uphill.

Yes.

He's not that "big" anyhow.

There was another guy on his relay team that is just a beast.
i dont think anyone said anything about him being "big" as in jacked. he's well over 6ft and not even 200 lbs. but he is a monster in the water without a doubt.

don't you have to get "dried out" to get really vascular? My bet is that he drinks tons of water. Hell, I'm an idiot though. I don't know.

Then he just got lucky. That being the case, he needs to have 50% of his medals confiscated and given to participants who couldn't make the team. He wouldn't miss 5-6 medals and think about how beneficial it would be for the other guys to get one. This is America after all, and its the only fair thing to do.

You are obviously against fairness, which means you hate the poor, minorities and the downtrodden. You are probably anti-gay too, you right-wing whacko.

Who's to say other members of this board couldn't work as hard as Phelps? Sure they don't have the genetic advantages he does, but isn't it the responsibility of the more fortunate to help the less fortunate?

Homophobe! You breeders pick-and-choose where you decide to be fair like you're working the food bar at the all-you-can-eat buffet.

Come to think of it, you're probably a fatty too.

I bet he has some legendary farts also. I mean, if I ate that breakfast, a couple hours later you could attatch a pilot light to my asscheek and use me as a cutting torch.

there's plenty of swimmers with his genetic gifts, he just outworks everyone.......end of story.

it's a mealy mouthed analogy you're trying to make. Hyperbole at it's finest.

And the mean-spirited selfishness continues!

I guess he's not willing to pay his fair share.

I'm not sure I'm believing the 2000+ calories of energy drinks per day, especially at night. The average amount of calories in say a Monster energy drink (16oz) is around 200 with the equivalent of 170mg of caffeine, that's comparable to 3 espresso shots. So if he were ingesting 2000 calories of monster a day, that would be around 30 ESPRESSO SHOTS A DAY...BULLSHIT

All that matters is his trainer has him taking in 8-10,000 cal/day

everything else is getting blown out of proportion....................
