Weight Training while doing MMA?

Lone Traveler

Was wondering if there are some good programs that would help compliment doing mixed martial arts or if my normal six day training (supposed to be a three day split but I add extra) would be sufficient enough? (Will give details of routine if needed)
Also, I'm debating if I should go train twice a day(2 hour sessions each) and hit the gym Friday, Saturday, and Sunday or if a morning weight training session and evening mma training is ok? Granted I'd like as much mma training as I can get, but I don't want to give up the weights either. Nor am I sure if a Fri, Sat, Sun program would be productive enough weights wise either? Any input anyone may give will be very much appreciated. Thank you

I wouldn't do 6 days a week.
Hit it 3-4 a week if can and focus on compound lifts. I'm at point where don't need add strength or size for weight class so is about maintaining what have while dropping weight/bf right now.
What's your goal? Are you planning on fighting? If so what are you weighing and planning on fighting at?
Biggest thing is if wanna do mma put that training first weights second and so that complement what your doing.

Right on. Many thanks... I'm at the moment doing it just for the training, physical fitness and everything that comes with it. As for fighting, that all depends how serious I get into it and if I feel it's the right move to make. It's not in my plans though. I'm 207 just cut down from 225 starting a Paleo diet a month ago.I don't have a goal weight. Where ever my training takes me I guess. I just like being strong. Even though I'm new with zero training was able to man handle a few people with the strength alone. Technique won out with a few, but you get my point. Thanks again for the advice. Might I ask you if training two times a day with weight training fri, sat, and sun sounds reasonable or stick to once a day mma with a three day split throughout the week with weights?

You can give it a go with 2 a days. Depending on person and what ever else your doing as far as work, activities, commitments etc might be just fine with that. I would split up your lifting days more rather than 3 in a row especially if do 2 a days.

Many thanks. I really want to do Kettle bells. Only thing stopping me is my gym doesn't have any, and I'd rather not try and train at home due to space restrictions and too many distractions. I do plan on eventually going to kettle bells for sure! At the moment I'm trying Rippetoes 3 day split. With a few minor additions.

you could also check out gymjones.com . it is expensive for a membership, but has great programs for mma and bjj fighters. it basically goes in 4-5 week cycles. you start with mass gain, then go to strength phase, then a power and endurance phase. all specific training to mma. it is similar to crossfit just more streamlined to mma needs. i have used it for 10 weeks and have made good gains strength and endurance wise. but it is more for the dedicated athlete as opposed to the weekend warrior. when you get to your final 5 week phase, it is 5on and 2 off which is a lot if your doing grappling and striking everyday too. hope this helps
