training teenage girl dancers

Thanks all! I just got back from the first session. The girls were absolutely delightful. They are all really good kids. It was like working out with a bunch of puppies... goofy and sweet, gangly and enthusiastic.

Well?

What did you DO?!?

KIS principal... Keep It Simple... they were confused, enthusiastic, and intimidated... two sets of near tears because the weights were "scary." I had the two girls who were the "hip cool" leader types almost lose their social standing because they realized they had bitten off more than they could chew. Fortunately, the otehr girls were even more intimidated than they were... so they didn't even notice them tearing up... and I was able to talk them through it easily.

The work out:

2 sets incline dumbell bench
2 sets of bench press
2 sets of pretending to try to do pullups
2 sets of pulldowns
2 sets of another pulldown type machine

...and that was it. They don't have a foundation yet... so the first month will be light.

They giggled. They laughed endlessly. They flirted with everything that moved. they were adorable.

My big stress of the day was that they learn the concept of isolating the movement... everything in correct form... and that you warmed up before you did your work sets.

Hee hee... this is a classic. I got woken up this morning at 6:00am. My cell phone was ringing. It was the mom of one of the girls. She was having "severe pain in the chest... trouble breathing." Fortunately, my daughter picked up the phone first. She's been training with me for a long time. I hear the conversation, "Tell Mechele that's normal. blah blah" About 10 minutes later I get another call. It's really bad. Will I come look at it so Mechele feels safe going to school. (She lives right across the street.) I go outside and Mechele and her mom meet me in the street. She's all concerned something is wrong. I said, "Nope. Instant diagnosis. If I poke her here and she yelps its soreness from her workout." I gave a one fingered poke to that spot just above the pec... she yelped... and I said, "Good work out. See you next week."

My little Spaniel puppies are going to be a blast to train. :)
