Swimming or Jogging?

I live in Florida, here in the next month or so, the heat will start to set in. I am currently jogging in the mornings which I can handle because of the beautiful weather. When the heat hits, I am afraid that I will be put off from running due to the heat.

I have heard that swimming is just as good as jogging, in fact, it is probably one of the best cardios to do.

What do you guys think as far as a 2 mile swim, or a 2 mile jog?

Thanks.

Ian

First of all, a two-mile swim is equvalent to a marathon, so you might keep that in mind.

As for one being inherently better than another, well, there are advantages to both. For example, swimming is much more physically demanding than jogging, so you won't be able to do it for as long. Plus, the water keeps your body temperature down so you don't burn fat as efficiently as you do when you're running. Swimming is an excellent excercise for fit people who want to stay fit, but not all that great if you're bf is high.

So it depends on where you're at physically and what your goals are.

swiming for 2 miles??? how many laps is that.. LOL!!

personally- Icouldnt do more than 20 minutes of swimming cuase it boring (no headphones, cute guys to check out.. etc.).... however swimming is less impact on your joints and tendons... so its prob better for you.

If your also a lifter-- I would stick w/the running...

Impact from running can take its toll on your feet, knees, etc. I think for this reason alone, swimming would be a far better idea. You can also look into those floatation belts and do some "Pool Jogging" Its a way alot of runners train while injured and want to avoid the shock from pounding the ground.

If I could swim two miles, I would do it. :)

I like swimming... although, I'm not really good at it and always end up just splashing around in the water or playing water-basketball... :)

Let me give you some expert advice here.

Swimming is far more beneficial than jogging. 8 years of swimming in high school and college has given me a sick V taper on my lats, thick rounded delts and a 32 inch waist at a bodyweight of 240 with a complete serratus showing.

1 mile swimming is about 4 miles of jogging. Just you try it. I still go down and swim twice a week. I swim from Sebastin A1A up to the North beach (one mile) and then walk back.

And you can get water proof headphones to wear. it is like meditation for me. Often, I swim the second mile back as well.

No stress on your ankles or knees either. Or breathing exhaust fumes.

I can't wait for the outdoor Y pool to open back up next week.
The Indoor pool at the other Y is always crowded of full of Sr's
doing water ballet stuff..
I can't run/jog because of bad Ankles and that is what caused the latest Knee injury.

And AAP, if you are indeed swimming open water, WOW !
Is that Surf or intercoastal ?
