My girlfriend and I just had a child... she needs to get in shape now

Congratulations on being a dad!

Here are some sources of vegetarian protein you might want to recommend to her for when you put together a diet:

By the way, you said she eats fish, so don't neglect that source. Fish is meat - super high protein. Tuna steaks are always good. I know a can of Starkist is 30g protein.

1) eggs
2) cottage cheese: 1 cup has 30g protein
3)whey protein powder: 1 scoop usually around 20g protein
4) soy milk: identical nutritional profile to skim milk (8g protein), brand I recommend is Silk, regular, unflavored
5) soy burgers: 1 burger has 18g protein
6) yogurt: around 8g, varies

There are also smaller amounts of protein in foods like beans and nuts.I don't really like eating tofu so I can't help you there, though the sort I see in the supermarket in NJ is generally higher in carbs than in protein. You might try this stuff called tempeh, which is a very grainy tofu-like product with a lot of protein in it and very few carbs/fat. I bought it once and I didn't end up a huge fan of the taste/texture, but some of my friends love it.

Oh yeah, and there are plenty of soy products that are high in protein. For instance, there are "chicken nuggets" made of seasoned tofu and "meatballs" made of soy and various veggies. Just go to the vegetarian section of your grocery store and look for a brand called Yves, that's the best tasting one out there.

One word of advice: go easy on the whey protein shakes, they make a lot of people highly gaseous.

Your baby girl is so precious!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I want a little girl now :)

Congrats from me, too! She is a little angel! :)

I have 3 kids - aged 11, 7, and 4 - and each time I blimped up and even reached about 200+ lbs. Yes, it was depressing. I think in addition to what the others have said I want to add two things. One - make sure she does enough cardio. That's the biggest mistake (other than watching my diet well) that I made. A woman's metabolism changes after giving birth (well, having kids wreaks havoc on the body as it is) and doing cardio on a regular basis will strengthen her heart, lose fat, and maintain stamina. Of course, her ligaments are loose now and she still needs to recover, but she needs to get to the point where she can exercise regularly. That is what she needs to build up to.

The second thing - support her. I'm talking about helping watch your little angel if she needs more rest (I know how infants can be) and when she needs to workout. My hubby didn't do this for me  , but it would have helped me a whole lot. I managed to get by and was able to exercise when my baby slept and this meant using my home equipment.

Hope any of this helps and wishing you all the best.

:)

Hey all :fro:
