I hate rap music

Interesting points, and I agree that our innate spirits influence which songs we are drawn to, to a point. But in each and every one of us exists love, and hate; happiness and despair; nurturing and violence. Whether we act on each of these is another thing, but being human means we all have these emotions and can relate to a variety of expression.

Agreed, but by listening to hateful and disrespectful music, you are feeding the hate, despair, and violence; while suppressing the love, happiness, and nurturing capacity. People are all of these things, because it is a natural reaction for our minds and bodies and the universe to try and create balance. If you have the desire to listen to hate music, then it stems from a tremendous love inside of you that you don't understand, and so you naturally try to suppress it by seeking balance on the other end of the spectrum. If one chooses the middle path, he/she will not be drawn to either end of the spectrum; love being on one end, and hate on the other. Besides, these are all just ideas and emotions that we create within ourselves. None of them are the truth. The middle path will bring you to true understanding, and universal love, which is not the same as our emotional love (which is more of a need than anything). You desire to love and be loved (in our emotional sense). That brings you to one end of the spectrum. Your mind will subconciously want to find something on the other end to help balance you out, which will be hateful messages, violence, etc. Like I said, people do not know why they do the things they do. The only real true balance is the middle path. The other way is metaphorically related to being bipolar.

Hey Krishna! I have never even heard of even one of those bands, and I think listening to the music that is really angry would wear me out. I would be interested in hearing some of the rap that kid5er suggested. I like all kinds of music, depending on my moods. However, even if I hated the music that you used to listen to, I support the artists' rights to express themselves free of censorship. In response to UA Iron's comment about "why do white people listen to rap?" Surely he is joking. ??? Anyway Krishna, surely you are not suggesting that we should sterilize musical content to not contain any hostile or negative content because it may influence people to be negative or hostile? The very idea reminds me very much of the novel, "A Clockwork Orange." Scary stuff.

Censorship? HELL NO! I did 8 years in the military proctecting those rights. However, I think that any responsible parent should do there best to steer their children away from that hardcore junk. If parents want their kids to feel sorry for themselves and wallow in their own self pitty than we have bigger problems!

terrible music

I fully agree that parents should steer their children away from explicit lyrics...no doubt.

Regardless of the lyrical content or the social implications, I just don't like the sound of rap. The basic concept of someone talking rhythmically over a repetitive semi-musical track does not appeal to me. I find it conceptually vacuous even before you add on the lyrical content or message. Without harmony and chord changes, it has none of the qualities that I find interesting in music.
