I hate rap music

Closeminded people like you get no respect from me. I don't listen to country or metal in my free time, but by no means will I write it off as crappy music. All types of music stem from some belief, attitude or experience. You have to be able to relate to it in some way or another. "Good" hip hop and rap touch me the way no other type of music can. And I'm white (OMG! no way!). I don't listen to it because it's popular. I listen to it because it makes me feel alive: the beat, the stories, the struggles, overcoming the odds...it all makes sense to me. If you can't understand that, then you have no right calling other types of music "crappy."

I think a lot of it has to do with maturity. When I was in high school and living in the East St. Louis area, I loved that shit. Then I grew up, joined the military, got married, had kids, and quit listening to it. I know for me, the biggest reason why I stopped isn't because I didn’t like the beat, but because it was so vulgar and disrespectful. I sometimes wonder how people can take that shit seriously.

My wife is from Mexico and grew up poor as shit, she never complained, she got educated (masters in bio-chemistry) and now is legalized and married. Some of these little whiney ass thugs in this country believe that they have no choice but to hustle and act like jack asses because they say that they can't get a job. I got an idea though! Stop acting like a piece of shit, pull your pants up, trim your hair, go to school, be respectful, and get to places on time or early!

Finally, I would say that young white kids are mostly spoiled little shits that wouldn't make it a block in some of the neighborhoods that these guys glorify! Take your daughter to the nearest ghetto and drop her off. Tell her to give you a call when it stops being fun (shouldn't take to long!).

P.S. I don't think that the starter of this post is racist! I think he is right on and that music is crap. What is even more crap is that these rich ass white guys pedal this shit to your kids!

Not all rap songs are vulgar or disrespectful. Some of them are about making it out of the ghetto or are just fun party songs. Guess what, I'm GROWN UP, MATURE, and WELL-EDUCATED too. If anyone is being disrespectful, it is you for calling people immature and uneducated just because they like a certain genre of music.

As I mentioned earlier in this thread, music DOES influence people. Granted there are those who are mature enough to listen to rap music without being influenced by its message, but why would anyone want to subject themselves to that message in the first place; especially a well educated, well respected woman as yourself. I grew up ghetto, and listened to nothing but hardcore rap music. I was young and naieve, and highly influenced by its messages. Guess what, I ended up in prison! A lot of my friends ended up in prison for life, or got killed. The music definitely had a big role in that. I have since turned my life around, and ditching the garbage I used to listen to was an intregal part of my success. You see all these dumb little punks listening to that shit and causing problems. Music DOES influence people.

I think blaming music for your actions is a cop-out. Just like how people blame movies and TV. People would have ended up doing the same thing without music. Unless it was like an idea they got from a movie or something. I listen to the worst rap music ever Ganksta NIP and Brotha Lynch Hung and I watch some of the worst movies ever. And I dont have any intentions to do anything thing that they mention or show.
I guess I can think for myself and not be easily pursuaded to do dumb shit.

I used to listen to nip and lynch too. I am not blaming rap. I'm simply pointing out the FACT that music influences people. Classical music influences people, blues influenced generations, same with jazz. I do think you're wrong that people would act the same without the music. Where would they get the ideas, the mentality, the style? It comes from the music. Why would you want to listen to those kinds of lyrics anyway? I guess some people just talk the talk, but don't walk the walk. What? Do you think you're in, or can relate to them? I don't get it! Oh I get it, you like the beat right? Fact is, you're drawn to something that you can and will never be. You're a follower.

Yeah hiatussin, put an end to everything you dont like. If Hitler were still alive, he would approve. Hey I have an end solution for you. Change the station to something you enjoy and quit grousing about the music you don't like. Censorship sucks!

Krishna, I'm sorry that you had a rough time when you are younger, but I think your cause and effect may be backwards. I think your attitude, friends, lifestyle at the time influenced what music you related to, but I don't think that the music created your attitude, choices of friends, or lifestyle. You are definetely a good guy now, and I give you kudos on turning your life around.

I listen to hip hop, and I like to think that I'm the kindest, most gentle-natured person you will ever meet. I don't really think that listening to nelly sing about his "grillz" or beyonce singing about her ass is really going to make me go out and commit felonies...lol. It's just fun, mindless entertainment.

I don't really listen to much hard core, gangsta rap but I sure don't think it should be censored. How come no one mentions some of the hardcore lyrics in rock music? I mean, we have a bunch of white guys on here saying to censor rap because of the violent/sexual lyrics? Hello? Rock songs have just as many explicit lyrics.

Others argue that hip hop has corny lyrics. This was the argument in a recent post about the "grillz" song. Gosh, there are corny lyrics in every genre. Not every song is meant to be deep. Really, does the classic party song, "Shout" make any sense? Nope, it is just fun to dance around to. God, I could list so many songs in country music, rock music, r & B, etc that are pretty damn corny, but we white people hear something corny in rap music and we want to ban it?

It does seem racist to me to only be bothered by explicit lyrics/corny lyrics in the genre that has mainly black singers. ???

I should re-phrase and say Gangsta Rap/Thug Rap. That shit is junk!

yeah mainstream rap you hear and see on the radio and mtv sucks....

but check out artists like ATMOSPHERE, Sage Francis, The Grouch, Murs, Benefit, and some others.
Some of the most thought provoking and intelligent lyrics I've heard out of ANY music genre come from all these guys.they are nothing like GuNOT or whatever.
