Generic Cutting Diet

If one was attempting to cut down, but didn't want to use a low-carb or any specially formulated diet, what would you recommend he/she do?

A 40% protein, 40% carb, 20% fat split? Just make sure there's a defecit in cals, 1g/lb. protein minimum, and EFAs correct?

Everyone is different, but I personally like 40-40-20 as a good split, including around a 500cal/day deficit. But it is the food choices you make to make up that split that will be just as or more important. Picking smart low GI carb sources -- except PWO, clean fats and lean protein are very important. I would stay up above 1g/protein per body pound, or even 1.5g if the 40% split allows it, just to try and maintain as much lean body mass as possible. Definitely include EFA's, but that goes for all diets, not just cutting.
