calories vs. macronutrient ratios

What is the most effective strategy for fat loss? Are macronutrient ratios as important as a calorie deficit? For example, say there are two dieters with similar BMRs. One dieter takes in 2000 calories on a keto diet, the other 2000 calories with a high carb diet. Wouldn't they both lose fat equally effectively?

both are important
calories are the fundamental matter in weight control but macronutrient ratios for body composition

That is an excellent way of looking at it BA.

westsnoop, for answering your first question the majority of people would lose more bodyfat and spare more muscle mass on a keto diet in your example. SOme individuals (about 10-20%) would actually gain bf on the high carb diet regardless of calories taken in.

yes studies were shown that rats fed below maintenance calories gained more body fat but lost overall body weight when eating a 90% carb diet than those eating the same calories but at a lower rate of carbs

well i started cutting about 6-7 weeks ago, started with a low cal high protein high carb low fat. I was dropping lean mass without much fat comming off. I switched to keto after 2 weeks, started dropping fat without loosing much LBM.

So yes from my experiece it makes a huge difference! :)
