27 sets for chest?

I've dont 25sets on chest (5sets wormup) but I, most certainly, overtrained. All my weights went down and I felt like shit the next two weeks. That's just me though. :(

a few years ago for 3 months i did one bodypart a day and did 21 working sets on each bodypart. i had lots of gains, but i couldnt do it for a whole year. 3 months was about long enough.

My best results have always been from doing 6-8 working sets for chest (not including warm-up). I can't imagine gaining from doing that kind of volume, even with 'assistance'.

Using Arnold as your argument for ridiculous volume workouts has no basis. The man was definately genetically gifted, yet his legs always remained underdeveloped compared to his massive torso and arms. I bet he would habe looked better and had more density if he trained using higher intensity, low volume workouts.

If you actually need more than 5 sets per bodypart (sans warmup sets) in any workout, then you're intensity is definately lacking and you're just wasting time. The most impressive lifters need only several sets to absolutely fry a muscle.

you are saying you only do 5 working sets on each bodypart...that is just pathetic and lazy.

I think you guys are missing the boat here. This man is in the gym for obviouse reasons. He has love for lifting weights. Maybe he is not out for optimal training time. I find even with myself that some times my training sessions are 1 1/2 hrs and others 45 min. (I do have a training partner). Like back in Arnolds day these guys took pride in there lifting. They loved the feel of the weights. They had no gloves and elbow wraps. They had a passion.

Thanks E

It really depends on how frequently each part is trained. I feel like I can fry my chest with 10 sets (5 flat, 4 incline, 1 dumbell or dips, not including warmups), but I train each part 2-3 times per week. A good way to measure volume is how many sets per week. If sets were never taken to failure, even 30 sets wouldn't overtrain me. I am always on the edge of overtraining, but that is how I progress.
