What can I do to protect the front of my legs when doing deadlifts? Getting beat up.

Is there anything that is made for protecting the front of your legs when doing deadlifts? I seem to beat the hell out of my shins coming up and right above my knees going down. I'm just under 6'3" tall so I imagine this is due to that. Any ideas/suggestions?

Some folks have tried baby powder with some success. I have never tried it myself, but give it a shot. I've alway been told that if you're doing it right, you will scrape some shin.

If you do it right you will drag it on your shins, nothing much to protect from it, try some baby powder to help it go up smoother. Be careful not to get to much of it on your hand though because it will make your grip slick, have a towel or something to wipe your hands off with and some chalk to put on your hands after that.

I'm seconding (if thats a word) this question,

Although its not the best thing and it makes it even that much harder to deadlift I use heavy socks pulled all the way up and jogging pants also. I was thinking of doubling up on my socks but they will not fit into my Chuck taylor;s and I'm throwing off my balance and leverage. even with jogging pants and heavy socks pulled all the way up, I still go home with blood stains on my shins and scabs on my legs. Like someone above said, if your doing them right there will be some scraping.

But when you weigh it out, getting the PR Deadlift vs. scabbed up shins.....its up to the individual as to which one is more important.

two things i have seen that might look kind of weird...
1. shin guards..like soccer players use
2.a strip of duct tape split down the middle and put right in the middle of the shin

i know it sounds funny, but i have seen pics of lifters doing this.not sure how well it would work but it's an idea...

I think this is along the lines of with what I was thinking but I was actually thinking of creating something a bit more elaborate. Like maybe some thin flooring material cut in 4 inch wide strips that would extend from mid quads to lower shins. I'll attach some adjustable straps at the very top and bottom.

The pain I get from it on my legs really takes away from my lifts. I find it hard to concentrate on the movement at times. I was just hoping there might be a commercial product to save me the trouble. Thanks for the replys brothers.

I rip up my shins like crazy with sumos. The pain doesn't affect me, but I get blood all over the bar and I don't think my training partners appreciate that. Lately I have been just wrapping duct tape around my shins where I have scabs. No more blood on the bar. :D

This is a problem I've had too. Going around with major bruises and red marks up and down my shins looks real nasty. Heres what I do-took a pair of tall socks (really mens socks) and cut the feet off. I pull these on till they come up and over my knees, then I put on real nice pair of thick socks that come up to my knees and over that I put on my regular wo pants and over that I put on a pair of sweat pants. No pain and nice gains! Look and feel like the michelin women but what the heck. One nice bonus is that my knees stay nice and warm. I love the deads but boy they was putting a hurting on this old lady ! Also helps protect the top of my knees.

Val,

perhaps the constant bending down and pulling up of all thos socks and pants would suffice alone as a deadlift workout. sounds like your lower back would already be toasted before you even got to the gym.

Well today is deadlift day and I think I am going to follow "The Mann's" advice and follow the Bob Vila school of powerlifting where we use duct tape.

Shit I'm still trying to figure out how not to get nasty strawberry bloodclots all around my upper thigh from my Groove Briefs.
