What Are Your Feelings On Cops?

Generally speaking, here in Europe there doesn´t exist the sort of stand-offishness between cops and civilians that has showed itself clearly to me in California. This underlying mistrust and resentment. Perhaps it stems from many of the laws cops are forced to enforce that most people see as just hassling people. (traffic violations, smoking dope) Any thoughts?

probably. plus americans are cynical. and most of us are brought up to disrespect authority. plus 95% of our tv cop shows show the cops as bullies & harassers who view civil rights as 'something to work around'.

Haven't actually had any help from them, well one time I got directions from one. But, mostly, I just remember being harassed by them, or chased by them as a youth. So, all in all, I don't really care that much for them.

So, either you're lying about one of these two statements, or you have proven to us that cops are, for the most part, indeed assholes. Cops disapprove of ticket writing, yet they continue to write them when it is up to their discretion? Thanks for validating my argument.

I have no reason to lie about anything. The argument that you originally made (and punctuated above) was that writing ALL tickets was mindless. I made no such concurrence. If you have exceeded the speed limit or have operated your vehicle in an unsafe manner according to the law, issuing you a citation is not, necessarily, mindless. Can it be? Yes. Are there times when it is not? The answer, again, is yes. This is called discretion. And like I said, many things can influence discretion. It's no different than it is at your job.

And because one cop having a bad day pulled Dude over does not mean that his job is necessarily oriented around generating revenue or harrassment. Assume the opposite for a moment, that cop was having a good day and let Dude go ... an event just as likely. Where is the revenue generation and harrassment?

All people who are arrested are innocent by definition. I'm not sure why you have an issue with this.

Listen I cant and wont vouch for all Cops. There are many,many that should not be doing the job. There are a couple that I would never want to get stopped by, due to their DICKHEADEDNESS.
But before you paint with such a broad stroke. Consider that there are a few of us that are trying from the inside to correct the Assfaces that we work with. But FUCK they keep hiring more and more of em.

I think for the most part cops are good guys, you encounter a bad one here and there, but you have that in every line of work.

i know some europeans and they are suprised how the cops are hated, because over there the cops interact with the people on the streets. where i live, they don't even want to give you directions if you are lost. they act like they don't give a shit about you, but they are supposed to serve you since you are the public.

Matt-- I am really suprised at your comments about "all" cops..... I always thought you were above that... it seems to me that you have a had a bad experience with the law.. It kills me when people bad mouth "all" police officers...... did you ever stop to think that maybe the reason that they are fucking with you is because you "DID SOMETHING WRONG" ? It's funny how everyone hates the cops until they need one....... OT.....has anyone else noticed that when people talk about 911 (New York) that they only talk about the 300 firemen killed?? There were also approx 70 policemen killed....... but they don't talk about them...... BOT--- I have ran into my share of cops that were dicks and treated me a little rougher than was necessary (due to the way I look----like a pitbull on a leash) but I always treated them with respect..... even though I knew I could rip them in half if I wanted too... they were just doing there jobs and protecting themselves......... and poon daddy was right about attitude.... it has saved me from tickets and from going to jail (when I should of gone) several times........... so to all of you that bash the Police....... a big FUCK YOU

Take it easy. First, yes, I meant it. I want them all to die. Have I had a bad experience with the law? Yes. In fact I have had about 20 bad experiences with the law, maybe 5 of which deal with traffic stops. I have had these experiences in various locations. I have never had a good experience with the law. Worse, when I have intentionally broken the law, where were the cops then? Nowhere to be found. They don't bother whites with plenty of cash, when we want to do stuff.

The idea of law enforcement is a good one in theory, but it has de-evloved into the lowest common denominator: deployment of maximum cops to achieve maximum revenue: emphasis on traffic stops. This is basically "nuisance policing". After all, pursuing and arresting real criminals doesn't make any more for the state/city/county/town. But stopping speeders on a rural Interstate, well, that's real dollars. The hypocrisy is amazing.

I also liked your coment about how "after 8 bad traffic stops, you might be pissed by the 9th". Very professional. Typical cop attitude. And I believe you are beter than most of them. At least you admit there are a lot of dicks.

Some cops actually do make some decent salaries, especially combined with off duty work. Long Island cops are among the highest paid in the country, and what a bunch of ungrateful pricks. How wrong of them to harrass people who pay their high salaries with their $30,000 annual property tax. They should pull us over and suck us off at least one a week. Now I am in FL and I see the same shit.

And I have been in situations where piggly wiggly's just want to pull me and others over because we are in a neighborhood they could never afford, or a car they just want to see up close.

I know several officials in the NYPD and Oakland PD. According to them, there are no explicit quotas. But there "guidelines" about "what to look for" to make up for revenue shortfalls. If it sounds like a duck, walks like a duck, it probably a duck. Or a quota.

Nordstrom - If 95% of the public doesn;t want them around, then they should go away. Aren;t they public servants?

Fantom, back to you - Do you ever stop and think about the cops that ran into the WTC? Those dumb motherfuckers probably thought they were going to arrest the hijackers. Were they going in to tell people to leave? The FDNY at least was convinced they were going to fight the fire. So what were the cops doing?
