The Mis-information Vault

So I thought it would be funny if we had a thread to share the BS training information that we read in musclemags, view on other sites, and hear from idiots every day.

I think it would be best to leave the sources anonymous...

I just read a good one that inspired this thread...

" But if you aren't comfortable with free squats yet, build up with leg presses, doing your free squats using just the bar to get the hang of the movement. Then slowly add weight to your free squat until you're matching your leg press amounts while still squatting with confidence and proper form. "

Haha people have no clue. I still enjoy hearing people say they are going to turn fat into muscle.

had a kid tell me at the gym that if you do little reps at heavy weight you will gain weight. and if you do a lot of reps at a smaller weight you will lose weight. riiiiiight.

white muscle fiber vs. red muscle fiber theory but without truely understanding the end results.

"Sweet workout, but when do you do legs?"-me

"Oh, I run on every off day" -rtard

"I did like a hundred crunches yesterday, trying to get that six pack" - Fat kid.

I hear and see dumb shit everytime i'm in the gym... it's unavoidable really, unless you open a gym and require members to take a test prior to granting them a membership... unfortunately you wouldn't make money doing so...

i guess to each their own, though, cause at least they are doing "something"...

the whole turning fat to muscle is a real crack up though... UGH...

LOL you guyz are some mean mofos in here.

Haha i had one guy (prolly on tren) fly off the handle Bc i jokingly asked him what good stuff he's using that makes him that big to where he only has to be in the gym for 20 literal minutes doing nothing but curl everyday.

Over heard a guy at my gym telling his friend that concentration curls were invented in the ww2 camps because the people had so much time on their hands. I was like wtf, is this guy serious?. I enlightened him of the voids in his theory.

hear this myth from young guys who have zero muscle and look like big marshallows with 30% body fat. "you have to eat a ton of red meat and drink a lot of milk to get muscles. " or "you need to get 2X your bodyweight in protein or you can't build muscle" LMAO. riiiiight. i guess guys in prison who eat slop gain by magic...
i've also heard the "you have to get protein right away after a workout" as if the protein is magically gonna absorb that fast anyway. and they think protein shakes and bars are gonna make them big.

oh and there is the "stay away from carbs" crowd who get scared at the mere mention of carbs. good quality carbs vs. junk carbs, big difference between the two. learn the difference and stop being so damn scared of carbs. you actually should infuse your glycogen levels right after a workout with carbs. you aren't gonna get fat eating good carbs like sweet potato or brown rice. you will eating krispy kreme and ice cream though. learn to differentiate between clean carbs and dirty carbs

1. workouts
2. diet
3. sleep

thats the order of gaining quality mass. some guys think that eating a lot of protein and sitting on their ass drinking beer all day is gonna give them muscles. it doesn't work like that. usually its guys in their early 20's who believe that who you see at the gym once a week

convo with one of my new obese clients

me "I want you to do 50 minutes of cardio ED"
them "but steve I already do that!"
me "what do you do?"
them "i'm on the elliptical"
me "elliptical doesn't count, i want you to fast pace walk or jog"
them "but steve elliptical is so much easier"
me "well duh its easier, cause it doesn't do shit!! running 5 minutes is like doing the elliptical for 50 minutes"

smfh at the Elliptical people... I go to an Athletic Club in my neighborhood, so half the people are psuedo-tennis players who also use the gym to workout when they aren't playing on the tennis courts [same for the basketball players on that court there] and all they do is the Elliptical. I literally see people walk in and use the elliptical for an hour, leave, than I mention it later and they tell me 'to try it yourself' as if it was a killer workout... smfh.

my favorite is when they say they want to put on some muscle but they don't want to get as big as me....and then they say they've got 2-3 months...

or when they feel the need to do curls in the squat rack

yeah they think its easy to get like this. one time i offered a buddy who came to my place some L arginine to mix in his water. he got mad at me and said "steve I don't want to get big like Arnold!" as if just drinking 1 pack of L-arginine will make you that big. wow people are stupid. they think its that easy to put on muscle.

gosh there were a lot of douches today at the gym.. something about holidays or weekends that attracts idiots cause these are people i have never seen before. this skinny kid (maybe 23 or 24 tops), he started racking a bar on the smith machine and when he would put the weight on he would slam the weights on the bar. he put on 315 which is weak as hell for the smith machine anyway, but he then started squatting the weight and he barely went down and did like 6 of them then racked it and walked to the drinking fountain like he was the shit and leaves the weights on the rack.

and then my lord this other young kid, one of those tattoo guys with piercings, a bigtime weirdo.. he was wearing this goofy ass hat, and his socks were up to his shins. and he was standing in front of the mirror with like 10 pound girlie dumbells and he would bring the weight up and twist his wrists. it was the weirdest thing i've ever seen. then he would stand and move his hips from side to side moving the weight up. no idea what he was doing, he looked like he never touched a weight in his life.

today must be the day guys who never workout decide to find time for the gym. I fear after New Years more and more douches will be at the gym hogging up the benches.. last year a couple kids who were together working out, were benching 85 pounds and they each took it upon themselves to use up 2 of the 4 benches instead of sharing one, while several of us regulars stood around waiting for them to finish. complete douchebaggery.

lmfao dude thats hillarious lol big like arnie i dont know were we find these people, i get kids coming in standing next to me saying yeh im puttin on size im almost as big as you when there bags of bones i dont know what mirror there lookin in but it aint fkin workin, i love the guys who come in for 6 weeks and take 2months off then ask you if there making progress!lmao one of the funiest ones ive heard wich is still hapening in my gym is the local source is selling bottles of sust 250 as 'test with deca in it' because it contains testosterone un'decao'lynate lmao

I'm one of those small kids... But I also know how to act in a gym. Yesterday I was about to start core and some 15, 16 year old kid [I'm 18] walked up and started chatting with a friend of mine, I swear he was talking louder than an M1 Abrams engine. The kid was screaming and yelling and tried to impress us by putting on weight to a calf machine. a) Was hardly any weight b) He couldn't do it c) He didn't know how to use the machine d) He walked around like he was president of the athletic club. I might not be big... But damn, at least I try to represent the little guys like a gentleman.

^^^ LOL funny stories guys.. also does anyone else notice when there is a girl in the testosterone section of the gym the younger doods wearing wife beaters who are still in the 'chasing pussy' stage of their lives seem to crowd around them and start doing heavy weight. newsflash the chick doesn't give a shit how much weight you are doing nor is she even paying attention to your scrawny immature ass, just like on the road if you are riding your motorcycle weaving in and out of traffic or you blare your ghetto stereo system up, or you rev up your engine and accelerate chicks don't think you are cool, they think you are an idiot! that might be the biggest mis-information of all, that girls get impressed when guys do stupid shit or look like fools

yeh lol a like how when a women walks in everyones beer belly gets sucked in and all of a sudden everyone becomes a badass lol spesh when some one jumps on your weights say when i was bewnching and some kids jump in for a 'kwik set' and drops in on themselves haha

back for more good stories...

the thing that bugs me the most is bad form...

saw 3-4 younger guys the other night (11pm) when i was in for a cardio workout... they were on the bench, had 225 on it... these guys were all tall and skinny (prolly 6' -6'4", 150-160lbs)... the weight was moving up and down at a furious rate, the spotter was basically getting a upper back workout at the same time as the idiot on the bench... just amazes me at the sheer stupidity i see all in the name of how much weight you can move...

i'm much more impressed with a guy that can move 225 with control vs a moron that's sloppily moving 315... get your shit together you shitheads...

^^^ yeah i think every gym has those scrawny tall wife beater 20 something dudes who eat slop and show up once every blue moon.

either commit to the gym or stay home. i wonder if they are aware that they need to workout more than once every 3 weeks if they are gonna go anywhere.

- When you stop lifting, the muscle turns to fat.
- Weight lifting makes you slow.
- You lose flexibility by lifting weights.
- Lifting weights is bad for your heart.
- Going more than half way down on squats is bad for your knees.

It's endless...

"Your knees should not pass over your feet when you squat"

Big one right there that I bet half the people on this board believe, I don't know why its so widely accepted because it 100% not true.

Yeah you read that one all the time, by so called experts.

I know it's from the female perspective but the one I hear all the time is "if you lift heavy weights, you're going to look like a man" or..."I don't want to have big muscles...I just want to tone". I hate the word "tone"....LOL

The other one that I love is someone asking me....how do you look like that? what's the secret? I always answer "diet and exercise, patience and consistency"...usually gets rid of them in a big hurry as they walk away looking disappointed! LOL

^^^ I tell them nutrisystem. wait for a reaction, and they are like "wow really? " and I start laughing and say I'm kidding. people want to believe in a magic pill, its human nature. maybe one day they will be walking on the beach and find a genie whom they can wish for eternal jacked body so they can stick to eating pizza, ice cream, and fast food.

LOL...so true! I'm pretty sure I would have found that genie if there was one cause boy did I look, until I finally figured out it was all about hard work and time!

There use to be a thread on this site a couple years ago that talked about all the funny stuff you saw and heard at the gym. It was a long thread. One that stood out to me was a guy brought a red plastic gas can to the gym to drink out of, LOL.

GOD DAMN IM GLAD YOU SAID THAT!
that ones bin driving me nuts for about 2 years now!
It seemed like all of a sudden i started seeing that everywhere. That shit had me thinking i was dead wrong and crazy!
YOU CAN NOT POSSIBLY SQUAT PAST PARALLEL AND KEEP YOUR KNEES BEHIND YOUR FEET!!!!!
it cant be done, you would hurt you back first off and not to mention you would fall the fuck over!

It is true that is why knee injuries occur from squatting. Your ligaments in the knees are not strong enough to support heavy weight. If your knees extend past your toes your squatting incorrectly. That tells me your weight is sitting on your toes and not your heels and outside of feet like it should be. If you doubt this continue squatting that way and as you age your knees wont be worth a damn. I urge you to do research on the best squatters in the world. Watch their form, none of them let the knees extend past the toes.

I will explain how to squat. You begin by driving your hips back first. Then you lower your self down. When you get near parallel you push your knees out. Then to ascend you drive your head up, then your legs. If you begin the ascent with legs first you will fall over. The body follows the head if it goes up so does your body. If it goes forward so will your body. At all times your lower back should be arched and your entire body should be rigid. Your weight will be on your heels and the outside of your feet. Not your toes.

I don't think so. The position of your knees at the bottom of a squat is related to your anatomy and the length of your bones. Longer Tibia/fibula will extend your knee out farther naturally. Longer femur moves your center of gravity back. Your center of gravity has to be over your feet, or you fall over. Your balanced position depends on your body dimensions. If you unaturally try to move your knees back from your natural bottom position, the weight has to move forward to stay balanced. To do that, your upper body has to be more bent over (more horizontal), putting more strain on the low back and hips.

Here's a study that supports what I'm saying. Note that knee torque is slightly less when forward motion is restricted (30-40% less just eyeballing the numbers), but back and hip torque increase over 1000%.

AGREED!
It is all relative to each person.
This maybe oversimplifying it a bit but as long as you're not hurting yourself, in danger of hurting yourself and getting a pump (feeling it) where you are supposed to you are probably gtg.
When I squat I like to go past parallel, as I come down my knees track forward and out.
I believe they come about even with my toes but not past them.

Yes long legs might come forward a little but if your heels are off the ground and knee is way out front your wrong. You need to learn how to squat better.

Heels off the ground is whole different issue and yes that is bad form.
