Something to think about regarding protein shakes and the health of your teeth.

Dentist visits for cleaning should be every 6 months. I've followed that and haven't had any problems, and I also drink about 2-3 shakes per day.

I was told by a doc today about great amounts of protein shakes leading to greater risk of developing tooth infections (cavities).

I for example think this is 100% true. I had perfect teeth nearly all my life. When I first started training i never used protein shakes to get the extra amount of protein needed to build muscle, however as I progressed implemented them quite often into my diet. Sometimes on very hectic days I had 4 shakes but and average of 2 daily. This leads me to believe that the cavities my dentist recently filled we caused becuase of the shakes mainly, since I brush regularly and use mouthwash. Prior to my fillings this last month I have not visited to Dentist for 4 years so I believe this was caused by mainly protein. Also another reason is the fact that i didnt visit the dentist for 4 years and therefore did not get them cleaned once a year like recommended.

Just thought I would share my opinion and what I heard.

Brush, floss , mouth wash, 2x/day. Not a cavity in sight for me.

I wouldn't worry about it. The comparison is mythical at best, it's never effected me.

I usually drink a protein shake in the middle of the night and go right back to bed without brushing. Been doing this for years and no cavities.

Of course protein ruins your teeth. Everyone knows that. We all wear dentures here. Feed you girlfriend TONS of protein. Helps with felatio.

.

actually, i had a similar experience. i used to drink about 3 protein shakes a day and it had a bad effect for my teeth.
i still drink 3 shakes a day but natural pea proetin, no sugars in it. not had a problem since. tastes sick though, but its definelty the sugars that are added, not the actual protein itself.

Chill Azul I didn't post BS and i know what causes cavities. Thanks to everyone else.

Well yes, but if you look at how cavities work, protein shakes causing cavities is just impossible. That's like saying meat causes cavities. There's like 3 grams of carbs (usually just lactose) in a protein shake. Heck, a glass of milk has more sugar than a protein shake, and last I heard, milk was a good source of calcium, and thus good for your teeth.

I never had a cavity in my life until my last visit. I sat down with my dentist to figure out what could be causing them, and she said she thought it was the chewable vitamin C pills I was taking. I told her about protein drinks too, but when I said no when she asked if there was a lot of sugar in them, she ruled that out as a possibility. Sugar = maybe, protein = no.
