protien shake before bed?

musclebosun

New member
Muscle repair takes place during rest periods and especially when sleeping. Would having a non fat, low carb protien shake 30-40 mins before bed be of any extra benifit or would it be just an unnecesary waste of protien powder?

It is a must have

Though a real meal rich in protein is just as good

Sure, a lot of people use casein before bed because of the protein "slow release.". Some also swear by having a shake pre-made so that when they get up to "answer nature's call" they can have another in the middle of the night.

I have a huge, thick shake every night....it's the one thing I look forward to....that and my sack of shelled peanuts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Definitely NOT non-fat. No carb yes.

You want something to help slow the digestion no matter what type of powder you choose to use.

Well, you are fine there and then you are not fine.

No probs in having carbs in your pwo shake before bed, as if you've done extensive weight training you need that replinishment. The kicker is that liquid meal is gone w/in 1 hour, and you need a SOLID lean pro/carb offering after that before retiring for the day.

No, you're fine....try just getting a meal in and lose the shake...see how that works for you....

While it is good that you both agree on this, which is great, leads to no discussion, problem for me,(as I already said in a different post, so this will sound redundant) I cant really get any food at that time!!! I usually get done working out at about 11pm, and just drink my shake and crash, cuz I get back up at 6am to do a few minutes of cardio, and get to chow, before I have to go back into work for a 12 hour day!

the one thing I have is MRE's but they are not to lean, nor easy to manipulate to what I need! (if that made sense ;) ) I can carry food back from the chow hall, but it will be pretty cold and not to good probably.... that is the only reason I drink the shake before bed, and not eat. Now of course when I get back home, I will work out at a more feesable time of the day, and none of this will be an issue, but for now, I gotta figure out something to make up for it.

Thanx for both of your guys help, I really appreciate it, and if I could give you any more K I would, but it gives me that damn "you must spread...blah blah blah' every time!!

I have noticed that eating before bed prevents you from getting cut. I only eat before bed if i plan on doing morning cardio or if i havent eaten for a very long time. Best thing is 5-10 grams of glutamine, it will boost your GH which will prevent catabolism.

100% disagree.....

Im not saying that you shouldnt eat. It personally doesnt work for ME when trying to get lean. Downing huge protein shakes before bed is deffinatly not what i would reccomend.

I take a casein protein about 30 min before bed and I take it with skim milk to even slow the digestion down a little slower. Like what I have gained with this protein. The protein that I currently take at night is made by ISS Research and is called Mecular Matrix. I also take Pro Complex made by Optimum Nutrition throught the day.

I take in 35grams of Micellar Casein with 5grams of Bovine Serum and 5 grams of Glutamine Peptides and 5 grams of good ol' Flax. Mix that son of a bitch in a blender and drink up. YUM YUM!!! I love that shake. I sleep feeling full and nice. I wake up being actually a little bit more with a pumped up look.

I have a question, I read that it actually takes 3 months for your intestines and stomach to breakdown meat. I do the same as many on here and drink and a protein shake and take fiber to slow the breakdown process.

So my question is since it takes sooo long to break down these meats how can you fully take advantage of the nutrients, and get them immediatly? I would think that taking some sort of shake would be better after a work out and hitting the sack since you can get nutrients immediatley(kind of like a pill works I guess)? Any thoughts here...

BTW...Micellar is slow digesting protein. But how slow? Is it like eating chicken or beef? Does the body digest it that slow?

Real food will be digested slowier

"Real food" will definitely digest more slowly than whey. I'm not so sure about micellar casein. A few things came out of the boire study.

1. Whey emptied within and hour and amino levels rose and fell off within two hours.
2. In this whey only meal 40% of the aminos were metabolized in the liver for energy.
3. Micellar casein elevated amino acid levels for up to seven hours and demonstrated a strong anti-catabolic effect.

Micellar casein is slower digesting for two reasons.
1. It formed a gel in the stomach slowing gastric emptying. Beef will leave the stomach in 1-2 hours.
2. Casomorphins in the micellar casein slow intestinal motility. It's so effective at slowing motility that it will stop diahrea. The longer the protein stays in the intestine the more will be absorbed.

Why os casein so expensive :kaioken: (compared to whey)

Casein in bulk (proteinfactory) is cheaper than whey

but

Brand name casein is more expensice than any whey (because the volume of whey sold are 10 times bigger than thjose of casein)

'cuz it's better and the companies want to make their profit margins that much higher, just to piss you off. Get 'im, Anthrax.

Maybe but casein costs nothing, just nothing
Far less than whey

If you purchase casein or milk isolate directly from the manufacturer it's a little over three dollars a pound but you have to buy a twenty kilo bag and it's unflavored.

The Boire study I quoted was from 2000 if I remember correctly and Scott Connelly was using milk isolate and casein as his primary ingredients in met-rx as far back as the early 1990's. Looks like he was ahead of his time but got bulldozed by the whey marketing machine.

Where did you read that it takes 3 months for your body to breakdown meat, I heard that it can take up to 3 days, but I've never heard of it taking 3 months.

That's garbage....completely.....After putting food into your mouth, it (the bolus) then has to travel through the entire gastrointestinal tract before coming out the other end. The gastrointestinal tract for the purposes of this exercise includes the oral cavity, the oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, and colon.

Food travels down the oesophagus at a rate of approximately 3 to 4 centimetres per second (1 to 2 inches), and the entire process takes about 5 to 6 seconds. In the stomach, food tends to hang around for a little longer and this depends on a variety of factors including the amount of food you have consumed, how much fat it contains, and also the acidity of the stomach. However, all food should have left the stomach within 2 to 4 hours.

In the small intestine, digestion continues and absorption occurs. From here on, the time to defecation will vary depending on the time it takes to adequately digest and absorb in the small intestine. This will usually take 5 to 6 hours. The "food then enters the colon for further digestion and water reabsorption before defecation. The time from it’s entering the colon to defecation is about 12 to 24 hours.

Thus, the time for food to travel from one end to the other probably ranges from about 20 to 30 hours. Although I haven’t had the time to look further into the rest of your question, I hazard a guess that it is unlikely that meat will hang around for a week given that the gastrointestinal tract is very effective in breaking it down with various enzymes and acidity of the stomach. Foods high in protein and fats probably would probably take a little longer to pass through than if it were carbohydrate

I 2nd that JKurtz... learned that in Nutrition class, but after workout (starting the workout around 6 p.m.) I drink a shake right after... then eat about 45 min to an hour after that.

The putrefaction shit about meat is a myth from some vegetarians

DITTO!

I'm not sure where I heard that myth, I think it was on t.v.

Damn first the calcium depletion myth from protien and now this, I guess you can't believe everything that you hear. :)

I have read that micellar casein protein take about 7 hours to break down in your system.

How long does it take to break down chicken because I eat a ton of chicken brest.
