Is a hot tub after lifting good for you?

Sometimes I just want to climb in a hot fucking tub after a harsh day of lifting. I had one of those intense workouts yesterday and I'm really feeling it today. Does a hot tub really help your muscles recover or does it actually do damage?

Well, hopefully I'll be in the military soon so I'll need a small portable one that I can fit on a balcony or in a back yard and then take with me when I PCS.

it is a great thing-wish I had 1!

Yes I've heard that hot tubs can actually recover recovery time, although I have seen little to back that up so I don't put much in it. What I like to do is go into the hot tub because it relaxes the muscles and can help prevent knots and stuff like that from happening, plus its great to stretch in after workouts, you can stretch so much better, then I jump in the pool and get a head rush because it's a good 30 degrees colder than the hot tub. Then I leave, so you get the advantage of the heat relaxing the muscles and of the blood rushing to your muscles from the cold. Then again this is my little theory but I like it :)

This is a very good theory. Hot and cold therapy has been used a long time to help heal. The same theory works for the recovery of muscles which are broken down during an intense workout.

frorider6....Most military gyms have hot tubs in them. Most of the time when I get in them while I'm sore they make it worse the next morning, especially my back. Ice rub downs are great though. It is nice to stretch after being in them but, the reason you can stretch so well is that like taffy, your muscles are heated and softer. I've been told that you can actually tear muscles very easily when stretching like that so be careful.

I would disagree that heat makes it easier to tear muscles. In fact like you said muscles become looser when heated up whether it be from an internal rise in body temp due to exertion or from an external source such as a hot tub. Of course if you are an idiot about stretching you can tear the muscles, but in general you can get much more accomplished when stretching in a hot tub or when you are warmed up really well. Stretching is like an exercise, you can accomplish a lot or a little depending on how you do it, it's not just like you put in your time and you are flexible. Although personally I could give 2 shits about being flexible really as long as I am not really bound up, it reduces risk of injury greatly and with my luck of injuries that are non-gym related I'll do anything I can to reduce risk :)

As an intercollegiate athlete and personal trainer I know that post workout ice is ideal, then before you go to bed jump in the hot tub to relax your muscles for recovery during the night when you natural growth hormone kicks in.

I've had ice baths up to my waist on numerous occasions post workout on leg day and a few hours later my legs feel great.
