Do I Count the "Negligable" Carbs in a Protein Bar?

You know how these protein bars say something like "4 grams impact carbs" on the wrapper, but when you look at it closely there are actually 24 grams or carbs or more?

When counting the dietary intake of carbs for overall calories do I count those 20 invisible carbs or do I pretend they are not there?

I'm really trying to get my diet dialed in and perfect. The protein bars are a great tool, but if I'm not counting this properly I'll be way overdoing the carbs.

Up to this point I've just counted the "impact carbs" and taken a peice of fruit or something for my needed carbs.

Any advice?

Count all carbs in everything. The impact carbs are the carbs that affect blood sugar level(which is bad)so 4g of impact carbs is pretty good for a protein bar.
 
You just count the impact carbs.

The other carbs come from alcohol suger. Because it has an alcoholic base it does not effect your suger level. When your suger level spikes thats what causes you to gain weight from carbs. In order to get your suger level to spike quickly you have to consume suger carbs(fast carbs). This is why you can consume a balance of fiberous carbs(slow carbs) to fuel your muscles. Because your body processes it "slower" your suger level does not spike hense you dont get fatter.
 
Don't count them in terms of the effect on insulin - agreed - BUT, sugar alcohols (polyols) still contain calories, and your body WILL use them for energy needs, etc., regardless of their impact on insulin. So keep that in mind.

I agree. Those carbs from sugar alcohol still affect calorie totals. Fiber, however, does not. Personally, I avoid protein bars entirely, preferring real food. (protein bars = high calories but not a lot of food)

Will eating these bars (or sugar alcohol) keep you away from ketosis, though? I don't think they will help, at least. I'm not sure, but I think they still convert to glucose in the bloodstream eventually, just very very slowly. I could be wrong, though.

This is what the debate at C-K-D.com was about, they were saying that if something like sugar-free gum can kick you out of ketosis then what does your body actually use for fuel becuase it can't use the sugar alcohols in sugar-free things!?!

Some people are more sensitive than others, some people can get away with eating actual carbs (I think the most carbs I heard someone eat and stay in ketosis was about 40g-50g) whereas, like I said, some people will be kicked out off an atkins bar or sugar-free gum.

yeah, Atkins bars as any other are full of hidden crap which trigger an insulin response :rolleyes:
 
Whey protein is inherently fragile and must be processed at low temperatures or its qualities as a protein are destroyed. That is why casein rather than whey protein is used in animal chow. When cheese, butter and cream were made on the farm, the whey and skim milk were given to the pigs and chickens. But today these products are made in factories far from the farms where they originated, so the industry has a "whey problem," solved by drying the skim milk and whey at high temperatures and putting the powders into energy drinks, body building powders and high-protein bars.
 
I thought the whole deal about sugar alcohol was that the body cannot digest it and therefore cannot use it as an energy source. No?

No

Sugar alcohol "just" elicit a smaller insulin spike
That's all
They have a caloric value
