Beer...how bad is this in moderation?

I was wondering how bad beer is in moderation? I don't drink at all when I am at home, or go out with friends. My problem is when I travel....and I travel to the US on a weekly basis. I like to socialize. Where is the best place to socialize with people you don't know? Bars. What do you do at bars? Drink.
I am sticking to light beers....Miller Light or Mich. Ultra. I try to nurse them to let them so I don't over indulge. I try to keep it limited to two, but sometimes have more. When I stay over the weekends, that is the toughest. I have Friday and Saturday to worry about. k. Starting to ramble now. grrr

I think alcohol consumption sits on an escalating scale in terms of how it will affect your gains/progress. Obviously, no amount of alcohol is going to help you - but the occassional light beer isn't going to do incredible damage either.

This is a lifestyle issue and you need to strike the balance you will be comfortable with. If it makes you miserable to skip the odd beer here and there, it might be better for yourpiece of mind to indulge. Just keep in mind that if you're looking for areas to improve upon (when it comes to your progress in the gym, etc.,) - ditching alcohol (in any amount) would be a definite first step.

So how bad is it in moderation? That all depends on the results you are expecting to acheive. If you can drink the beer and look in the mirror and still be happy/satisfied with your progress - then I'd say it's worth it for you. But if you look in the mirror and you don't like what you see, eliminating beer would be a no-brainer.

I never understood the need for so many guys to drink. Is it so hard to lay off? yeah, it's so much more fun to drink, but it's not that hard to get used to. I'm not really a social drinker. MAYBE some wine if I'm out with a chick, or a Bailey's and Coffee perhaps. Beyond that, I just drink water. I like to have a good time as well, and if that's the plan for a special occasion, I go all out and get wasted, but still try and drink lower calorie alcoholic drinks. Light beers, Stoli O and club soda. Overall though, it's really an all or nothin type deal.

The hardest part for me is that I attend a lot of corporate functions with open bars. (makes the dieting harder there too). Even harder to say no when it is free. Plus, a little alchol loosens me up a bit which makes conversation flow a little better.

I hear ya on conversation. But you gotta learn to just do it naturally. Believe me though, I know what you're sayin.

I'm most definitely the same way, which is why I'll sometimes indulge. But it does come back to striking that balance between what i'm willing to sacrifice in terms of my goals in the gym and whatnot. I try not to be toooooo extreme or restrictive.

A strong will power should handle the "open bar" effect :)

Well I go out every Fri and Saturday. It was to the point I couldn't afford to buy food for my diet anymore. I had to cut costs somewhere and realized I spent 40 dollars last friday and 50 on saturday on what? A few drinks for myself, food and a tip and a few drinks for a friend. There's my food money for the whole month! I'm 22 and in the prime of my life, and I can still go out and have a good time, it's just alcohol doesn't have to be a part of it. I've been drinking water or diet coke. Drinks just make me fatter and more broke. I dont need either right now.

try not drinking when ur out with ur friends, i'de like to see this one done myself. hahaha, if ur gonna drink try to consume slowly, u'll still feel great especially after knowing u didnt burn thru ur pocket, and if u trying the best tasting light beer, id'e try coors light. some ppl could drink hardcore and burn that shit off like its nothing, so its all on ur body.
