Workout B Rippetoe's 3x5 - Critique **VIDEOS**

I am talking about other means of progression than what Rippetoe suggests: simply adding weight to the bar. I don't even think absolute max weights are PRs and from time to time I don't even look at PRs because to me PRs can mean a whole lot of things. For Rippetoe, a PR is a PR only if you increase the weight. He limits every form of progression down to just one factor: the load. And I am the one who threw the baby out with the bathwater?

You asked me about injury rate. Fine. Thats pretty easy to answer. For the next 3-4 days, just check out the Workout Programs section on bb.com. Everyday there will be a bunch of "injured while on Rippetoe" threads which will pop up. But, lets say you discount that: a few years ago there were these guys who were the biggest campaigners of Ripp's program. One of them - the most impressive of the lot, managed to (in 9 months and @ 16 years of age) get so strong he could Squat 500 lbs, Deadlift 600 lbs and Bench Press 450 lbs. What happened to him? Nobody knows. His last journal entry was something he got injured and ever since, there's been no talk of him. At one time, if somebody argued that Rippetoe doesn't get you strong, he'd be set forth as an example. He was their true poster boy. I think his name's Toefur or something...I dunno...can't remember the details.

If you want to talk about injuries, head over to the Rippetoe forum - it used to be on Strength Mill and now it's on his own site. Whenever Rippetoe is questioned by some kid talking about being injured, he tells the kid to deal with it. Rippetoe is extremely callus in his approach to injury prevention. You ask him how to avoid injuries and he's gonna give a very simple answer: "Be careful and other than that there is nothing because everyone gets injured so fucking deal with it." Now, IMO that is no way to address such an issue. To me, injuries aren't a joke and every single thing should be done to avoid them like the freaking Black Plague.

Rippetoe isn't selling his book for charity. This is a money making business for him. He's not helping people out on his forum for fun. It's marketing. His goal is to profit. Who is his market? Teenagers and youngsters just getting into lifting who he can talk shit to and treat like shit and they just keep coming back for more and more.

Ask Rippetoe about foam rolling, mobility drills, unilateral exercises, how to avoid and prevent injury and about progressing using something other than single factor or linear periodization.

If someone is new to lifting, what should be the primary focus: loading the bar or the quality of each rep? Rippetoe says load I say quality.

Linear factor periodization is just A-Ok. There's nothing wrong with that and I have zero issues with that principle. But we're not discussing that.

If you guys want to know more about this, go to the forums I listed and check it out for yourself. Also, spend some time on IA's forum - which has some of the storngest people on the internet posting and helping others on it and you can check for yourself how almost none of the big guys are fans of Rippetoe plus most of them don't like his exercise cues either.

Lol everyone knows what he would say to that: "Shut up and do your squats!"

I'm not defending Rip here at all, like you say people can think what they want.

Then you go off into a big multi paragraph rant rant about Rip.

Next point:

What I am going to ask you to do though is to back up your claims.

And instead of refuting me, you throw around some anecdotal (at best) things you have read on internet forums.

Then I ask about muscle involvement in back vs. front squats:
Totally ignored.

Like I said, you are on your way, but you have a lot of experience needed before you can talk with the authority you seem to want to. My suggestion is to actually seek out some of the guys you read about in these forums and try to at least talk with them, if not spend some time training with them.

And for the record, Rip like my rollers just fine. He was really amused by my straight piece of PVC pipe that I use. But he had gotten into my wine a bit, and maybe was lying to me. And I'm glad Rip is making some coin. Isn't that what you are planning for GUS? You seem to have branded yourself, and what you do, so I am only taking a shot in the dark here.

But then we come full circle back to that experience thing....

Okay ark your not going to like any of this.......This is the first time I got a look at you and IMO your not fat. Your tall and skinny little buddy. If you have any fat on your stomach you need to quit obsessing about it because your Tall and skinny. In addition to being TALL and Skinny your frail and weak. Now this fucking cardio shit is going to stop. I don't want you to do it or ask about it ever again. Seriously after looking at you i think it's stupid that your so bull headed about it. Now rippetoe has come under attack on your thread. Don't listen to what anyone says he is still god because we are just building a base and working on fundamentals. particularly form!!!! As gay as this sounds next vid your going to have to wear tighter clothes and buy a pair of chuck taylors and wear those onlyin the gym. i think you need to sit back more bring your stance in about 2in. and focus on a point about 6ft. in front of on the ground. i squat in front of mirror in my gym because I'm always in a hurried,lazy,and rushed. This is one of my bad squatting habits. I'm two things humble enough to admit my faults and smart enough identify and someday correct them. You are not. It looked like you were looking in a mirror.....stop that. Use lighter weight and post another suat vid..........i'm late for work hopefully I can check out your other vids fri. or sat. You should start getting some good feedback from this thread.

You're aligned to Rippetoe and one thing which I do know about debating these issues is that neither you nor I are going to come to an agreement. This is pointless jibber jabber.

You keep harping about experience. What makes you think I plan my own training? Whatever I learn, is from experienced - infact FAR more experienced people than myself.

You keep harping about experience. What makes you think I plan my own training? Whatever I learn, is from experienced - infact FAR more experienced people than myself.

What I mean by experience, is that you have only yours - and that you don't have the experience yourself to be speaking from the place of authority you seem to be coming from. You obviously have an axe to grind with linear progression and Rip in particular.

You also have not been able to debate me on the issues that I have brought up. So far you have been a master at the duck and weave, and when you do try, you bring up internet forums as your sources. That's like quoting a Michael Moore film in an argument as the basis for your point. Again, this goes to your lack of experience. Had you knowledge you profess, you would have known exactly who I was talking about and the studies I presented.
