What's so bad about Sorbitol/Glycerol?

junk

New member
If you are not into CKD, but into a low carb diet,
what's so wrong about using products that contain Glycerol
or Sorbitol? Except the gasto disturbances and farts some may experience. I think the neglible insulin response Glycerol and Sorbitol have are far better than other carbs like bread or sugar (When dieting that is) ?

Nothing wrong as long as there is no abuse

those nutrients are Sugar alcohols
they are carbs which mean calories, insulin spike (though pretty low)

On the other hand glycerol is a pre-contest aid for its potential to "redistribute" water and improve "cuts" and vascularity

Sorbitol cause an insulin response that's #1; however, glycerol, on the other hand, can be stored in the liver (more likely to be stored in the liver) thereby causing any fructose (fructose related products) and some glucose (if other sites are full) to be stored as fat and to be 4x more likely to be stored as fat than regular. It wont make you obese but it will sure mess w/ your diet.

Just a note, even when doing low-carb, ketosis is crucial for maintaining a positive nitrogen balance and burning maximum fat - I.e. breakdown of FFA to ketones, for FFA cannot be use for energy for the most part w/in the first 3 weeks of low-carb ketosis. Remember, due to the brain glucose requirements, anything under 100g carbs for the first 3 weeks is considered a ketogenic diet for the most part.

if you aren't on CKD, use it....I do regulary.....I have at least a bar and probably a total of 10-12 splenda pakages easily a day w/ my shakes, coffee, etc.....no harm no foul....if I was cutting hard, I'd prob. shy away a little......

You're right, but I've seen a chart somewhere and the insulin spike was really very low, I don't think much more than a vegetable, but don't quite remember. It's also allowed for diabetic patients, so I guess it's still an o.k. option. Still much better than Maltodextrin or Dextrose.

I see. So what you're saying is that I can take glycerol without any problem if I don't combine it with frucrose or glucose containing foods ?
